New Weatherable Resins from Bayer MaterialScience LLC Designed for Outdoor Use

Lawn and garden, agriculture, automotive and transportation are among the markets targeted by new material grades

Pittsburgh, August 19, 2009 - Today's engineering thermoplastics are optimized to perform well in an endless array of demanding applications. But some of the toughest challenges for these materials are those doled out by Mother Nature. Three new grades of weatherable resins by Bayer MaterialScience LLC are designed to stand up to prolonged outdoor exposure while maintaining their mechanical properties and appearance. Consequently, they may be suitable for use in demanding outdoor applications ranging from lawn and garden to automotive, agriculture and transportation.

Bayblend® W90 XG is an opaque, very high flow UV-stabilized polycarbonate/ acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (PC/ASA) resin formulated by Bayer MaterialScience for injection molding parts that require good surface appearance and weather resistance for outdoor applications. While this resin is well-suited for most outdoor applications, another Bayblend® grade ® W100 XG resin ® is ideal for high-heat applications in which increased thermal resistance is required.

For customers seeking a resin that demonstrates an outstanding combination of weatherability, chemical resistance, high impact strength, high heat resistance and high flow, Makroblend® WT203 (PC/polyester) resin is a versatile option. All three weatherable resins can be injection molded or co-injection molded over a substrate material. Makroblend® WT203 was specially formulated to retain its impact properties after weathering exposure for a longer time than alternative products (see Figure 1). This makes it suitable to replace metal or painted plastic parts in outdoor applications that were previously thought to be unsuitable for PC/polyester blends (see Figure 2).

"We developed the new grades to meet customer demands for tough, weatherable materials," said Robyn Francis, senior scientist, product applications development, Bayer MaterialScience LLC. "Now, with the introduction of these new resins, OEMs have materials that can help them improve the long-term performance of their products."

Bayer MaterialScience LLC is one of the leading producers of polymers and high-performance plastics in North America and is part of the global Bayer MaterialScience business with nearly 15,100 employees at 30 sites around the world and 2008 sales of 9.7 billion euros.
