BTI Photonic Systems Extends Metro Edge to Outside Plant Applications with Environmentally Hardened Optical Networking Platform

Extended operating temperature of Netstender 1020 delivers cost effective Optical Backhaul of 3G, FTTx, IPTV and WiMax network capacity expansion in outside plant environments.

Ottawa, Canada, March 2, 2006 - BTI Photonic Systems Inc., a global supplier of WDM optical networking solutions for the build-out of new broadband services at the Metro Edge, announced today the availability of its environmentally hardened Netstender 1020 platform for outside plant cabinet environments. The addition of a hardened Netstender product brings the company's WDM Metro Edge photonic layer approach to the outside plant delivering superior economics for optical backhaul of large bandwidth capacity applications including IPTV, 3G wireless data, WiMax, and FTTx.

Cost effective optical connectivity - WDM for outside plant environments.
BTI's Netstender family provides thin route WDM for cost effective deployment in both regional and Metro Edge applications. Certified for the extremes of temperature and humidity in outside plant enclosures, BTI's 1U Netstender 1020 takes the optical edge to feeder and access networks. The Netstender 1020 in addition to its CO capabilities for CWDM and DWDM now supports CWDM passive applications including multiplexing and optical add-drop across an extended temperature range of -40C to +65C.

The extended operating range for the Netstender 1020 expands the Netstender family to deliver optical connectivity to outside plant environments for today's high bit-rate applications, 3G, IPTV, WiMax, wireless data, and FTTx, explains Glenn Thurston, VP Marketing, BTI. "Cable companies, wireless carriers and telcos are now scaling up their new high speed service offerings which require anywhere from four to ten times their current bandwidth capacity at the network edge," said Thurston. "For a wireless carrier today between 6% and 10% of their operating budgets are focused on lease costs for backhaul. Increasing capacity four to ten times with the current architecture forces a reevaluation of backhaul costs and carriers are moving to WDM in the outside plant network for fiber relief and cost effective backhaul coupled with traffic aggregation schemes of either Micro-MSPP's or Pseudo wire".

BTI's Netstender 1020 meets all the test requirements outlined by Telcordia GR-3108 for class 2 telecommunications equipment with extended operational temperature range of -40C to +65C. Deployment in Telcordia Type 3 certified enclosures is now approved which includes deployment in outside plant partially controlled temperature environments.

Netstender - The only WDM platform optimized for the metro edge
BTI's Netstender allows providers to profitably scale bandwidth growth and connect new metro and regional networks with colors of light for build-out of GbE, 10GbE, Video-on-Demand, FTTH, DSL and wireless backhaul services. Netstender extends the reach of optical ports on routers, SONET/SDH, Ethernet switches and can expand exhausted fiber capacity with unique scale-up capability from 2 channels to 32 with CWDM / DWDM.

BTI's Netstender is the only platform designed and optimized for the network edge - delivering the industry's smallest carrier grade photonic platform for extending, expanding, and connecting optical networks for deployment of new broadband services. Unmatched functional integration combined with operational features eliminating the complexity from optical networks has resulted in a platform that defines a new economic benchmark for the metro edge and regional networks.

About BTI Photonic Systems
With a focus on making broadband telecommunications networks more flexible, easier to operate and less expensive, BTI Photonic Systems has developed its WDM Netstender(TM) platform, the industry's first metro edge optical system designed to utilize photonic layer architecture. Netstender consolidates key transport capabilities (DWDM/CWDM, Optical Multiplexing, Amplification, Dispersion Compensation and Wavelength Translation) within a single network element delivering industry leading CAPEX and OPEX savings, high density and future-proof networking capabilities for metro edge and regional applications. BTI's Netstender addresses the issues of fiber relief, reach extension, 10G, 1G, and metro Ethernet service overlay enabling carriers to deliver new high-speed services while dramatically reducing their costs and increasing their overall market footprint.
