Warm White LEDs are equivalent to incandescent lighting.

Press Release Summary:

Suited for indoor lighting applications, warm white Luxeon LEDs offer correlated color temperature (CCT) of 3200 K, typical color rendering index (CRI) of 85+, and average light output of 22 lumens. Solid-state light source replicates glow of incandescent bulbs and retains 70% of its initial power through 50,000 hr of operation under typical conditions. Product also provides beam that is cool to touch and contains no UV.

Lumileds to Ship Warm White, Incandescent-Equivalent LED in August

New Luxeon Product Will Be First Warm White LED To Enter Mass Production; CCT of 3200K and CRI of 85+ Will Broaden Use of LEDs in General Lighting

NEW YORK, NY (May 6, 2003) - Lumileds Lighting today announced the planned August release of a warm white version of its high-brightness Luxeon LEDs that will feature a correlated color temperature (CCT) in the 3200K range, a typical color rendering index (CRI) of 85+, and an average light output of 22 lumens. This will be the first warm white, high-CRI solid-state light source available on a volume basis as well as the first light engine of any kind to replicate the glow of an incandescent bulb, dramatically increasing the appeal of LED illumination for indoor lighting applications.

The new warm white Luxeon emitter complements Lumileds' cool white Luxeon LEDs, which offer a CCT of 5500K and a CRI of 70, as well as the company's complete line of Luxeon color products. The new emitter's ability to closely mimic the spectral output of incandescent sources over the visible color range, including a significant increase in rendition of deep red colors over both conventional LEDs and fluorescents, stems from proprietary phosphor technology developed at Lumileds' Advanced Labs.

The announcement coincides with today's opening of the Lightfair International lighting trade show and conference in New York City. Lumileds will be demonstrating the warm white Luxeon product in Booth 777 at the show. Mass sampling begins this month, and orders will be taken beginning in July.

"We have been using LEDs in a number of products, but the stark blue-white light cast by typical emitters is not appropriate for many applications, particularly projects where designers want to mix LED fixtures with incandescent lighting," said Richard Klapper, Vice President of Designplan, a New Jersey-based developer of high-endurance architectural and institutional lighting. "This new Luxcon product solves the problem, and we already have plans to use it in wall washes, in-ground uplights, step lights, facade washers, and a chandelier we're building for a performing arts center."

Designplan is one of several firms exhibiting prototype fixtures using the new Luxeon product at the Lightfair show.

"LEDs are rapidly gaining traction in general lighting because of their compelling advantages over traditional light sources, but lighting designers have been waiting for a warm white emitter to put many of their design concepts into action," said Jason Posselt, Director of Product Marketing for Lumileds Lighting. "With our new Luxeon product poised to meet this demand, we expect the market for solid-state illumination to explode."

In addition to maintaining Lumileds' brightest-LED status, the new warm white Luxeon emitter will deliver the same industry-leading lumen maintenance as other Luxeon LEDs with an expected retention of 70% of its initial power through 50,000 hours of operation under typical conditions. Luxeon's long-lasting brightness addresses industry dissatisfaction with the long-term performance of lower-brightness 5mm LEDs, which degrade to 70% of their original output after only 3,000 hours.

The warm white product will also provide the design benefits common to all Luxeon LEDs, including an extremely small footprint, long life, low energy consumption, and a beam that is cool to the touch and contains no UV.

All Luxeon products are available from Lumileds Lighting through Future Electronics (1-800-FUTURE1).
