Voltage Regulation ICs suit satellite receiver applications.

Press Release Summary:

Intended for analog and digital satellite receivers, the Low-Noise Block Voltage Regulators (LNBRs) family consists of monolithic linear and switching voltage regulators, which provide power and interface signals to LNB downconverter via coaxial cable. Switching regulator tracks to just above linear regulator output, providing low power dissipation. Available in buck or boost versions, LNBRs offer legacy system compatibility and 2-way DiSEqC(TM) communications.

Allegro Microsystems, Inc. Announces a Comprehensive Family of Voltage Regulation ICs for Satellite Receiver Applications

Power Management IC Family (A8281/8282/8285/8287)

Worcester, MA - December 11, 2003 - Allegro MicroSystems, Inc. announces the release of four new low-noise block voltage regulators (LNBRs) for satellite set-top box systems. Designed to future-proof set-top designs, these highly integrated devices
feature legacy system compatibility and offer the flexibility of two-way DiSEqC(TM) communications.

Intended for analog and digital satellite receivers, the highly efficient LNBR family consists of monolithic linear and switching voltage regulators, specifically designed to provide both power and interface signals to the LNB downconverter via the coaxial cable.

According Mark Gaboriault, Allegro's Power Management Strategic Marketing Manager, "This famity of devices delivers exactly what our customers have been yearning for - a flexible yet highly integrated part (inctuding output FETs), best-in-class power efficiency, and a competitive solution cost in an industry-standard package."

Specific features and benefits of the Allegro LNBR family include:
o Wide Operating Voltage Range - buck or boost versions are both available
o High Efficiency - integrated switching regulator tracks to just above the linear regulator output, providing low power dissipation and permit single voltage supply
o Reduced Component Count - integrated FET and selectable output voltages
o DiSEqC(TM) 1.x and 2.x Compatible - internal 22 kHz tone oscillator or optional bypass
o I2C(TM) Bidirectional Communication - reads status and writes control of 8287 and 8285 boost devices
o Legacy System Compatibility - 13/18V output switching for non- DiSEqC(TM) communication
o Comprehensive Protection - including internal over-temperature, externally adjustable short circuit, and reverse current protection
o Industry Standard Packages -16-lead SOIC and 24-lead SOIC

This LNBR family is manufactured using Allegro's ABCD3 (Allegro Bipolar CMOS DMOS 3rd generation) process, and is supplied in either a standard 24-lead or 16-lead SOIC package. Depending on the version, the 828x family of LNBR devices is priced from $1.47 to $1.91 per part for quantities of 1,000.
