Very Low Drop Out (VLDO(TM)) 150mA Micropower Linear Regulator in ThinSOT Package Has Very Low Output Noise

MILPITAS, CA - June 2, 2003 - Linear Technology announces the LTC1844, a very low dropout (VLDO) micropower linear regulator that can deliver up to 150mA of continuous output current from a ThinSOT(TM) package. The LTC1844 is the first VLDO that can operate from input voltage as low as of 1.6V, making it ideal for single cell Li-Ion, multi-cell Alkaline or NiMH applications. It is available with an adjustable output or with fixed outputs ranging from 1.5V to 3.3V. At 50mA of continuous output current, dropout voltage is only 30mV, rising to 90mV at 150mA. This VLDO voltage enables the LTC1844 to regulate over the very small voltage differentials, frequently found in handheld applications. It maintains an output voltage accuracy of +1.75% over the full temperature, voltage, and current ranges. Furthermore, with a low profile (<1mm) ThinSOT package, and tiny external 1uF ceramic capacitors it provides an extremely compact solution footprint desired in space-constrained applications. Finally, the LTC1844's supply current of only 40uA (operating) and 10nA (in shutdown) make it an excellent choice for battery-powered applications that require optimum battery life.

The LTC1844's low output noise of only 30uVRMS (over a 10Hz to 100kHz bandwidth) makes it ideal for noise sensitive applications. Internal protection circuitry includes: reverse-battery protection, current limiting, thermal limiting, and reverse-current protection, to provide enhanced reliability and ease of design.

The LTC1844 is available with an adjustable output, or with fixed 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 2.8V, 3.3V outputs. All versions are available from stock in a 5-lead ThinSOT package. Pricing starts at $1.15 for 1,000-piece quantities.

Pricing starts at $1.35 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
