FalconStor's Next Generation VirtualTape Library Solution Delivers Superior Availability, Comprehensive Enterprise Connectivity and Centralized Manageability

New VTL Offers High Availability Clustering, Native NDMP Support for NTAP Filer, Fibre Channel Connectivity for IBM iSeries, and Backup Consolidation via Delta Replication

MELVILLE, N.Y., August 18, 2004-FalconStor Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: FALC), a leading developer of network storage infrastructure software solutions, today announced the next generation of its VirtualTape Library (VTL) solution, developed to deliver superior availability via Active-Active Clustering, expanded platform (NAS, IBM iSeries) support, seamless interoperability with market leading tape drives, tape libraries, and backup software via collaborative certification and qualification of solutions offered by SONY, Hewlett Packard, Legato and Veritas, as well as backup consolidation through policy-based delta replication over IP.

FalconStor's unique VTL solution, powered by the company's award-winning IPStor Enterprise Edition software, consolidates the management of backup resources while enhancing the reliability of backup operations and accelerating the speed of recovery. VTL leverages industry standard high speed disk to provision virtual tape drives and libraries to backup servers attached to an iSCSI/IP or Fibre Channel (FC) storage area network (SAN) to maximize performance and return on investment.

"FalconStor's VTL solution combines speed and reliability in a single, easy-to-manage package," said Mike Karp, senior analyst for Enterprise Management Associates. "Add the new clustering and long distance IP replication, the support for additional libraries, and enterprise connectivity to just about every type of IT infrastructure, and VTL is an easy choice for companies who need to maintain nonstop uptime without compromising their current investments in backup software and procedures."

As a pioneer in the development of VTL solutions, FalconStor continues to develop innovative software based on market and customer requirements. Adding to the VTL's inherent ability to aggregate and provision backup resources, this next generation VTL solution offers a new level of centralized management via IP-based delta replication, which replicates a virtual tape cartridge over IP in a peer-to-peer or many-to-one configuration, based on policy.

Reliability is a critical IT concern, and with FalconStor's VTL solution, users can perform storage controller-aware I/O load balancing, and leverage the transparent failover and fail-back capabilities of a vast array of intelligent storage systems, including EMC CLARiiON, IBM FAStT, HP MSA, and StorageTek BladeStore and D-Series. Users also have the ability to configure two VTL appliances as an active-active cluster to eliminate any single point of failure.

FalconStor's VTL solution is the first to deliver comprehensive enterprise connectivity supporting Fibre Channel connectivity to open systems, iSCSI, NDMP, and the IBM eServer iSeries. Native NDMP backup support for Network Appliance Filer and other industry standard NAS appliances enables VTL to perform backup and restore operations over an IP network, with the VTL appliance in effect acting as the NDMP server. FalconStor has also added a Hosted Backup Enabler service, which allows certified backup applications such as Legato NetWorker, Veritas NetBackup and BakBone NetVault, to be installed directly onto the VTL appliance, eliminating the need for a dedicated backup server. FalconStor's VTL solution can also connect to and manage many different tape libraries, including the IBM 3494 Tape Library, for import and export of virtual tapes to and from physical tapes.

FalconStor's ongoing interoperability testing with leading hardware and software solutions ensures seamless integration of VTL into an existing IT environment, while optimizing the overall performance and functionality of VTL and other technologies used by FalconStor customers today. Recent efforts have resulted in certification with HP OpenView Storage Data Protector, HP ProLiant DL580 server, HP StorageWorks MSA1000 disk array and HP StorageWorks ESL E-series tape libraries, as well as Sony Electronics' SAIT drives and PetaSite storage systems.
