Victaulic Vortex(TM) Fire Suppression System Receives FM Approval

Victaulic Vortex Creates New Category, Becomes the World's First-Ever Class 5580 Hybrid Fire Extinguishing System

CHICAGO - Victaulic, the leading global producer of mechanical pipe joining and fire protection systems, today announced its Victaulic Vortex(TM) 1000 Fire Suppression System is now FM Approved as the world's first-ever Class 5580 Hybrid (water and inert gas) Fire Extinguishing System. In approving the system, FM created a category specifically for Victaulic Vortex because the revolutionary system could not be classified within the approval agency's existing boundaries.

The new system, the latest innovation from Victaulic, a company known for introducing ground-breaking technology, extinguishes fires without the use of any toxic chemicals by deploying a high velocity, low pressure mixture of nitrogen and water, leaving minimal wetting in the protected space.

"Our customers are very happy with the recent FM approvals of the Victaulic Vortex system," said Frank Barstow, sales manager for Victaulic Vortex. "Not only does the product's low impact installation and ease of design make it a cost-effective solution for both new and retrofit construction, but engineers can now have confidence in specifying and installing a product that is both certified and unique to its FM category."

Victaulic received two certificates from FM specifically for total flooding fire extinguishing systems. The following is referenced by FM, approvalguide.com.

Victaulic Vortex(TM) 1000 Fire Suppression System for the protection of combustion
turbines, machinery spaces and special hazard machinery spaces in enclosures with volumes not exceeding 127,525 ft3 (3600 m3) and a maximum height of 24.6 ft (4.9m)

Victaulic Vortex(TM) 1000 Fire Suppression System for the protection of combustion turbines, machinery spaces and special hazard machinery spaces in enclosures with volumes not exceeding 9175 ft3 (260 m3) and a maximum height of 24.6 ft (7.5m)

The Victaulic Vortex 1000 system extends the boundaries of existing technologies, surpassing the capabilities of both inert gas and mist systems. It provides supreme protection and fire suppression with limited residual moisture, no toxic chemicals and full design flexibility. The system can be utilized in a sealed or open space with no requirement of room integrity, is easily scalable for simplified system design and can be rapidly reset after discharge to minimize facility downtime.

Installations covered by the FM certificates include:

o Machinery space applications such as oil pumps, oil tanks, fuel filters, generators, transformer vaults, gear boxes, drive shafts, lubrication skids, diesel engine driven generators and other similar machinery using fuel and/or lubrication fluids with volatilities less than or equal to light diesel.

o Special hazard machinery space applications such as internal combustion engines or other equipment using fuel and/or lubrication fluids with volatilities less than or equal to heptanes and incidental use or storage of limited quantities of flammable liquids of not more than two 55 gallon (208 L) drums.

o Protection of combustion turbines in enclosures. The Victaulic Vortex system is currently only available in North America. For more information, please visit www.victaulicvortex.com.
