Vicor Leverages Universal's Dimensions Linechart to Increase Utilization

Vicor Corporation, Andover, Massachusetts - an industry leading manufacturer of modular power components and complete power systems - has selected Universal Instruments' latest software module, Dimensions Linechart, to increase their line utilization and productivity. Its graphical interface provides a continuous means of monitoring key points of interest while providing the ability to quickly pinpoint issues in the manufacturing process.

Since its inception in 1981, Vicor Corporation has engaged in the design, development, manufacture, and sale of modular power components and complete power systems. One of Vicor's business units, VoI Chip®, has risen to the top as an industry-leading provider of high-performance converters, regulators, and current multipliers used in a wide variety of applications such as: servers, datacenters, telecom, defense electronics, and much more. Vicor's VoI Chip products have already gained industry recognition as they've been incorporated into two of the top 10 supercomputers in the TOP500 (TFLOPS) and three of the top 10 supercomputers in the Green500 (MFlops).

In the late summer of last year, Vicor's VoI Chip unit purchased two manufacturing lines comprised of Universal's flagship Genesis SMT placement platforms. This equipment set was complemented with the addition of Universal's Dimensions Line Manager software module, which enables improved line utilization by preparing changeovers offline and tracking materials during and after production. "We already made great strides in our productivity with the Genesis Platforms and Line Manager, but add in the ability to proactively recognize potential problems before they affect our production levels - this is a complete manufacturing solution," states Vicor Director of Package Development, Rudy Mutter.

Dimensions Linechart is equipped with six main graphically displayed key performance indicators that are vital to all PCB manufacturers: productivity, efficiency, component wastage, components per hour, board counts, and quality. Each chart is configurable to display statistical data and trends, or provide alerts when desired performance levels are not achieved. "Linechart truly provides the missing pieces to the production environment," states Universal's Marketing Director, Heinz Dommel. "Any opportunity to recognize even the slightest production inefficiencies translates directly into higher utilization rates and increased profits".
