ViaLogy Plc Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute

LONDON, Aug. 6 /- ViaLogy plc , a leading innovator of real-time network-centric signal processing platforms, today announces that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to integrate its products, SPM(TM) and MicroSPM(TM), with sensor systems developed by ITRI spin-out companies for uses in safety, security, surveillance and infrastructure management.

SPM(TM) provides a standards-based, sensor-policy engine for managing large-scale networks of distributed sensors and systems, including building management systems, energy planning and physical security. SPM software allows automated analysis, alerting of appropriate personnel and rapid response. MicroSPM(TM) offers a high speed hardware platform for fully-autonomous incident-based rapid detection, analysis and response for sensor and video processing. Using this technology, ITRI's products can be enabled to interact rapidly with other networked subsystems which support a range of communication protocols.

Founded in 1973, ITRI has played a vital role in Taiwan's economic success. Notable ITRI spin-off companies include United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC), and the Vanguard International Semiconductor Company (VIS). Backed by its broad research scope and close industrial ties, ITRI is a leader in the global industrial R&D community. ITRI has signed research alliances with leading foreign companies and universities such as Lucent Technologies, Microsoft, MIT and the University of California, Berkeley.

Michael Kelly, President and CEO of ViaLogy's US subsidiary, commented: "This collaboration is a strategic one for ViaLogy. ITRI has a reputation for creatively adapting foreign industrial processes to address identified needs and using these technologies to help its spin-out companies become competitive in world markets. In today's knowledge-based economy, we believe this cooperation with ITRI will help position SPM as a comprehensive sensor interoperability solution and service delivery platform for various industries and applications across Asia."

Dr. John Mai, ViaLogy's Manager for RFID Platforms, said: "ITRI has relationships with the major technology-related businesses in Taiwan. This collaboration will accelerate adoption of SPM(TM) for large-scale industrial applications. We are already working on integrating innovative sensor solutions being developed at ITRI to quickly expand and scale up its installed-user base."

Dr. Wu Chi Ho, Director of the Power Control and Sensing Application Technology Division, of the Energy and Environmental Research Laboratories within ITRI, commented: "We believe ViaLogy's SPM(TM) and MicroSPM(TM) platforms present exciting solutions to fill gaps in our development and commercialisation process. Their IP-enabled sensor interoperability software offers us a path to rapidly bring our infrastructure monitoring projects to enterprise-level end users in the oil and energy market sectors, both within Taiwan and internationally.

"ViaLogy's ability to add new sensors and support new network interoperability protocols within 72 hours is very attractive for our scaling requirements."
