MagnaChip Semiconductor Launches Feature Optimized VGA CMOS Image Sensors

SEOUL, South Korea, May 17 -- MagnaChip Semiconductor Ltd., a leading global designer, developer and manufacturer of image sensor solutions, mixed-signal and digital multimedia semiconductors, today, announced the launch of its high-performance, feature optimized MC501CA and MC501CB VGA CMOS sensors designed to enable cost effective entry level imaging solutions.

The MC501CA/CB CMOS sensor family includes an image signal processor with features such as lens correction, noise reduction, and image scaling. The optical format enables modules as small as 5x5x3.4mm, allowing OEMs to address the market requirement for slim industrial designs.

The MC501CA/CB CMOS sensors operate at 30 frames per second at full- resolution. The 8-bit YUV output interfaces to all standard processors and base-band solutions. The output interface operates at 2.8V, digital and analog circuits operate at 1.8V and 2.8V respectively. The MC501CA offers a 1/7" optical format and a total power consumption of 55mW at full frame rate, while the MC501CB offers a smaller 1/7.4" optical format and an on board free- scaling function.

Jason Hartlove, Senior Vice President of the Imaging Solutions Division said, "Our customers are beginning to look at how to add video conferencing capabilities into their high end and 3G phones, and the small z-height of modules using the MC501CA/CB makes this possible for the second camera in the phone. In fact, modules using the MC501CA/CB are smaller than current CIF modules used for video conferencing, despite having three times the resolution." Hartlove continued, "In addition, our customers are also looking for ways to add imaging capabilities to their very low end phones, which up until now have not had cameras built in. The MC501CA/CB are well suited to meet the needs of this application which includes good quality imaging performance at an effective solution cost."

Samples are now available of the VGA image sensors in various package types including die in wafer form, reconstructed wafer and chip scale packaging (CSP.) The product is currently ramping to production. MagnaChip has a complete suite of demonstration systems and reference designs to support OEMs and integrators during product development.
