Vertical Machining Center is operated by digital control.

Press Release Summary:

With heavily ribbed cast iron construction used throughout, VMC760XP3 incorporates guideways with minimal overhang, dual-ball linear guides, and 45 mm ballscrews. It features 30 x 24 x 24 work envelope with rapid traverse rates of 1,690 ipm on X and Y axes and 1,410 ipm on Z axis. In addition to SKF 40-taper, 12,000 rpm spindle that offers face and taper contact, VMC offers thermal compensation, through-spindle coolant, chip wash down, and chip conveyor.

Hardinge-Bridgeport VMC760XP3 On Display For First Time At Eastec '05

Hardinge Inc. will display for the first time since its acquisition of Bridgeport International the Hardinge-Bridgeport VMC760XP3 at EASTEC in booth #1341. This latest generation of high-performance vertical machining center is differentiated from competitive VMCs by its level of quality, high standard specifications, packaged features and very reasonable price. The machine also carries the new Hardinge-Bridgeport logo, as well as the company's new color scheme that is being phased in over all product lines.

The major innovation to the VMC760XP3 is its construction characteristics. For example, the machine geometries are typically two times better than the ISO standards. Heavily ribbed cast iron construction is used throughout, providing excellent stiffness and overall rigidity. Wide-spaced guideways with minimal overhang, dual-ball linear guides, and oversized 45mm ballscrews also contribute to higher overall stiffness and excellent distribution of cutting forces. A low center of gravity assists with vibration reduction. Critical surfaces and alignments are achieved through hand scraping techniques. The tool changer is mounted on a separate shoulder to avoid stress on the column.

Further, the exclusive German-built SKF spindle offers face and taper contact and is significantly stiffer than competitively classed machines. The robust 40-taper spindle provides radial stiffness of 60 lbf/0.00004" and axial stiffness of 70 lbf/0.00004". Standard speeds are provided up to 12,000 rpm powered by a 25-hp motor (15,000- and 20,000-rpm spindle speeds also offered with 30-hp motor).

The machine has a 30-position tool changer (48 option) with 4-second chip-to-chip time. Rapid traverse rates are 1,690 ipm in X/Y and 1,410 ipm in Z. Featured are impressive acceleration/deceleration rates up to 6 m/sec2 (240 in/sec2). An interesting note about this model is that it has a 30" x 24" x 24" work envelope. For this size VMC, it is unique in that there is 24" of Y-axis travel. Most competitors offer 16" to 20" in Y when there is 30" in X.

The VMC760XP3 is loaded with standard features that are options on most other machines in its class, including thermal compensation, 290-psi through-spindle coolant, chip wash down and chip conveyor. The lining of the chip guards is stainless steel to improve chip and coolant flow and reduce paint chipping. Customers may choose either the standard Fanuc 18i-MB or the optional Heidenhain iTNC530 system. Both are advanced digital control systems and the Fanuc control includes Bridgeport's enhanced "FastOp" package containing timesaving, one-button macro operations.
