Automated Die Storage and Retrieval Improves Productivity, Inventory Control in Aluminum Extrusion Applications

The Remstar Shuttle® Vertical Lift Module (VLM) offers improved productivity and inventory control for the automated storage and retrieval of dies in aluminum extrusion operations. The Shuttle (VLM) is an enclosed system of vertically arranged trays and computerized controls that automatically locates and delivers a tray of dies according to operator commands, delivering it to an ergonomically positioned workstation. Each tray includes a storage cradle able to hold approximately 15-30 dies. Up to 31 trays will fit in a 16-foot high Shuttle VLM for a maximum capacity of 930 dies per unit. To retrieve a specific die, the operator either scans a work order or enters the tray or item number into the Shuttle VLM's control system. FastPic inventory management and control software tracks the die location and delivers the tray to the automatic tray extractor for easy removal. FastPic software also tracks and schedules die maintenance and tracks die usage history. For added security, access to individual trays can be restricted to authorized personnel. The Shuttle VLM eliminates operator walk and search time associated with traditional rack shelving, significantly improving productivity while reducing bending, reaching and stretching. The modular design of the Shuttle VLM allows it to be configured to meet varying ceiling heights. Depending on useable building interior heights, 75 percent and more of a conventional rack storage system's occupied floor space can be recovered. Several Shuttle VLMs can be placed side-by-side or back-to-back to form a compact, efficient automated storage and retrieval cluster. Remstar International Inc., a company of the Kardex AG Remstar International (KRI) Group of Zurich, Switzerland, is a leading provider of automated storage and retrieval systems for manufacturing, distribution and warehousing applications.
