Vertical Lathes suit automotive and aircraft production.

Press Release Summary:

Equipped with FANUC OiT or 18iTC control, Vertical Turning Lathes require minimal clamping force as work piece weight sets and holds itself in place, preventing work piece damage due to excessive force. Models are available with 8/10 in. chuck with 4,000 rpm spindle; 10/12/15 in. chuck with 3,000 rpm spindle, or 15/18/21/24 in. chuck with 2,500 rpm spindle. Gang type, single turret, or double turret tooling configurations meet various production requirements.

New Vertical Turning Lathes With Small Footprint

Chevalier's new vertical turning lathes combine high performance machining, reliability and compact structure to achieve new levels of productivity, precision and automation integration. The machines' relatively small footprint is designed to fit limited spaces in automotive and aircraft production lines. The vertical lathe design requires minimum clamping force as the workpiece weight sets and holds itself in place, preventing workpiece damage due to excessive clamping pressure. The extra rigidity allows high metal removal rates in applications such as wheels, disc brakes, flywheels and hubs. The addition of an available robotic, gantry or conveyor type carriage systems and other holding fixtures allow partial or full automation capabilities. Models come with either FANUC OiT or 18iTC control and are offered with 8/10" chuck with 4000rpm spindle; 10/12/15" chuck with 3000rpm spindle and 15/18/21/24" chuck with 2500rpm spindle. Gang type, single turret or double turret tooling configuration are available to meet various production requirements. X and Z Axis deliver 787ipm rapids. High speed, double turret models can run either left only, right only or simultaneously, substantially decreasing idle time. Optional C axis and live tooling VDI turret enable the machine to perform multiple operations in one setup. New design enhancements include a heavy duty spindle with large diameter NN double-row cylindrical bearings, delivering runout accuracy within 0.0001". A multiple sealing system in the spindle protects it from chip and coolant contamination. A programmable tailstock system employs alloy steel box ways for maximum clamping rigidity. The Z axis brake system is separated from servo motor and stops movement instantly during power interruption. Operator convenience is addressed through extra wide doors for easy loading and unloading of irregular shaped workpieces, big front window for improved visibility and a slanted bed for efficient coolant and chip washdown. The machines are built to last and deliver consistent performance even under heavy use. Solid, one-piece Meehanite cast iron frame is stress-relieved, high-frequency annealed and closely ribbed for maximum dampening. Highly rigid alloy steel box way design and pretensioned ballscrew allow rapid acceleration/deceleration while delivering superior surface finish and closer part tolerance. In the 8" and 12" models, hardened and ground box ways on the X & Z axis use high precision roller pack bearings and specially designed gibs for better preload, reduced friction and smoother movement. Parallelism, flatness and squareness are within 0.00016". Box type column is heavily ribbed to minimize distortion during heavy machining. Standard features include chip conveyor with coolant tank, air blast, automatic lubrication system and hydraulic unit. Other high speed, mass production options include C axis, power turret, ZF gearbox, spindle chiller and coolant-thru-tool fixture.
