Sunnen Introduces New SV Series Vertical Honing Systems

An innovative servo-controlled, linear tool stroking system that ensures the most precise bore geometry possible is just one benefit of Sunnen's new SV series vertical honing machines. The SV-200 and the SV-1000 will be unveiled by Sunnen Products Company at IMTS 2004 (Booth B-7200), along with several other new machines and the rest of Sunnen's industry leading line of precision bore sizing and finishing systems.

The SV series is a true value leader in honing-- you get power, precision, durability and the latest technology at a very competitive price. Both systems feature a new tool stroking system that produces a true vertical stroke, resulting in more control and higher accuracy in bore size and finish. With this new stroker design you can obtain a consistent Crosshatch pattern throughout the entire length of the bore ... a result that was nearly impossible until now. This new design allows the machine to dwell in any part of the bore, end-to-end, selectively removing stock for the straightest, most precise bore possible.

With an industrial touch screen color display, the SV-200 and SV-1000 are easy to use. The Windows®-based control system features drop-down menus and has an unlimited storage capacity for job setups. The systems also display many languages.

For fast and easy setups, the SV-200 has a 3-axis hand wheel control. The easy-to-use hand wheel allows you to quickly "fine tune" the vertical stroke position and the honing tool feed position. As an option, you can also adjust the lateral column position through a servo motor with the same hand wheel for parts with multiple bores in-line. With this option, multiple bores can be honed in-line automatically.

The SV-200 and the SV-1000 are built to last. The SV-200 features rugged, heavy-duty construction is comprised of cast iron and heavy-gauge steel. The SV-1000 has a durable cast composite base. A stainless steel enclosure on both systems surrounds the work area and helps to ensure the system will look as good as it works for many years. And with massive "lubed-for-life" guide ways, the SV-200 and the SV-1000 require very little maintenance.

With its 5.5 kW (7.5Hp) spindle motor and powerful tool stroking motor, the SV-200 can handle almost any job. It is ideal for precision, medium- to high-volume production honing of bores between 19 and 200 mm (.75 to 8"). Applications include diesel cylinder liners, engine blocks, construction and military hydraulic blocks with multiple bores, AC compressors, 2-cycle engines, gear hobs, large valve bodies, brake drums, landing gear components, large connecting rods and bearing sleeves.

The SV-1000 is the choice for precision medium to high volume production in small bores, 3 mm to 65 mm (.120 to 2.56 in.). Applications include fuel injectors, fiber optic components, fuel pumps (common rail-type), hydraulic cartridge valves, medical devices, pistol and machine gun barrels, connecting rods, refrigeration components and gear hobs.

Other features include:

o Removable sides to facilitate the adding of automated parts loading/unloading

o Choice of coolant systems-paper bed, magnetic-over paper bed-or it can be connected to a central coolant system

o Choice of two tool feed systems - rotary or linear-for versatility in tooling selection
