Verizon Unveils Next-Generation 'Verizon One' Home Communications Center for FiOS Customers

All-in-One Device, Manufactured by OpenPeak, Brings Together Voice, Data and Video

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 8 -- Verizon Monday (1/8) unveiled the FiOS generation of its Verizon One communications device, bringing together an all- in-one voice, data and video center for the home.

Expected to be available this spring, the next-generation Verizon One will be manufactured exclusively for Verizon FiOS Internet customers under a multi- year contract with OpenPeak, a leading developer of converged technology products.

"The new Verizon One will use the power of our all-digital, all-fiber network to become an integral part of the FiOS lifestyle," said John Wimsatt, Verizon's senior vice president for broadband product management and development. "It goes beyond reducing the clutter of multiple communications devices to providing a robust, multimedia digital communications solution - only available to Verizon's FiOS Internet customers."

Sleeker, more powerful and more flexible than the current Verizon One device, the next-generation command center features a digital cordless phone mounted on a tablet-sized base. The seven-inch, high-resolution touchscreen provides a one-stop solution for multiple household communications needs. From the device, FiOS customers can access their e-mail and voice mail; log into personal calendars and address books; consult movie listings; and check the latest news and weather. Additional features planned for the future would allow customers to access traffic reports; order a pizza or movie tickets online; and send memos or text messages to family members.

The new device will accommodate both traditional and VoIP phone calls, while also streaming music from the Internet to be replayed over attached stereo speakers and previewing images or video from digital cameras or camcorders. It will also play movie trailers from the Internet, connect to a printer and support a total of up to five handsets throughout the home.

The next generation of services will be available through a combined, built-in WiFi and Ethernet connection to allow access to Internet-based content. Multiple USB ports will be added to accommodate the peripheral devices. Software developed by Verizon will seamlessly connect telephone and online functions to the new device, which can be located any place in the customer's home where there is access to a phone jack and an electrical outlet.

Dan Gittleman, CEO of OpenPeak, said, "This agreement with Verizon reflects our mission to engineer and build products that converge and simplify a wide variety of functions on a single, easy-to-use platform, whether it's universal remote controls or innovative home communications systems such as Verizon One. This project fits precisely with our expertise, while also demonstrating Verizon's ongoing commitment to the Verizon One phone and continuing development of tools to help consumers communicate on multiple levels."
