Original Press Release:

Installed on Secondary-Side SG Ports During Outage, RadVentLoc(TM) Safeguards Personnel, Equipment

North Huntingdon, PA (December 15, 2002)- Engineered to protect service personnel and plant equipment, new RadVentLoc(TM) covers from VISTAS Corporation install on hand holes and inspection ports of a secondary-side steam generator during outage service. By design, RadVentLoc(TM) covers reduce millirem emissions by a factor of ten or more, meet foreign material exclusion (FME) standards, and satisfy locked high-rad requirements. Precision fabricated yet rugged, RadVentLoc(TM) covers install quickly and safely with no tools, yet bar access to all but authorized personnel. RadVentLoc covers come in two standard models: RVL-60 for 6.0" hand holes and RVL-24 for 2.4" inspection ports.

To reduce millirem emissions and meet FME standards, the patented RadVentLoc(TM) cover design incorporates two layers of protection. First, a close-mesh stainless steel screen deflects external debris without impeding airflow. Next, a 2" thick lead shield with an array of diagonal channels absorbs and disperses gamma rays, all while maintaining needed ventilation. Both layers are sandwiched securely in a welded stainless steel shell that slides snugly into position.

To satisfy locked high-rad requirements, the RadVentLoc(TM) cover is secured to the port flange using a supplied resettable combination padlock. On the RVL-24, the padlock shackle loops through an eyelet on the cover arm and a port flange hole. An anchor bolt supplied with the RVL-60 threads into a port flange hole prior to cover installation; with the cover installed, the eye of the anchor bolt protrudes through a hole in the cover's arm, ready to accept the padlock. In either case, the cover, once locked, can be removed only by personnel given the combination. If an alternate security scheme is required, either cover can be supplied with an optional key padlock.

RadVentLoc(TM) covers are ideal for any maintenance supervisor responsible for limiting access to and gamma ray emissions from a secondary-side steam generator during outage service, In addition to the standard RVL-24 and RVL-60 models, custom-fabricated RadVentLoc(TM) covers are available to fit practically any size port. VISTAS also manufactures hinged manway covers in a variety of sizes.
