Enhanced Version of Glacier's M-Station(TM) Vehicle Mount Computer Features Freezer Capability and Battery Backup

Harsh Environment Computing Ideal for Extreme Temperatures & Volatile Power Conditions

Glacier Computer, a leading developer of versatile and powerful industrial computer systems for harsh environments, announces two new features to its rugged M-Station(TM) computer, an optional display heater and a modular uninterruptible power supply (UPS) battery backup. The new display heater allows users of the M-Station to easily move between multiple temperature zones in a cold storage facility, while preventing condensation. The external UPS provides non-stop operation of the M-Station while supplying added protection from volatile forklift power spikes.

"Glacier Computer is proud to offer these new features in the M-Station system. We have continued our tradition of offering full systems for our customers and value-added resellers. A complete vehicle mount system now includes heater options, cordless bar-code scanners, printing capabilities, and power protection components," said John Geary, Vice President of Glacier Computer.

The display heater has been integrated into the touch-screen of the M-Station, allowing the system to operate in environments with temperatures reaching down to -22 degrees Fahrenheit (-30 degrees Celsius). By bringing the temperature of a touch-screen surface above dew point, the display heater helps to eliminate condensation that might occur when moving the M-Station between warm and cold climates. This feature makes the display easier for users to view and prevents water droplets from freezing on the screen when brought back to a colder environment.

The compact UPS is a back-up power system used in conjunction with a DC/DC converter. It allows either electric or propane vehicles to be used efficiently and within normal operating protocols, while protecting mission critical, real-time data. With electric trucks, the vehicle battery may be exchanged without the need to reboot the computer system. With propane vehicles, operators can keep the system running while they stop the engine for short breaks.

"Electrical and power-related problems are the single biggest issues with on-board, vehicle mount computing," said Dan Poisson, Glacier Computer's Director of Technical Services. "Our modular approach with the new UPS provides isolation from vehicle power spikes and the computer system itself. It also allows for easier maintenance, lower spares cost and support, because it is more convenient for on-site personnel to swap out the lone external power component in case of failures. Furthermore, the modular approach helps to isolate the heat created by the power supply, preventing it from creating thermal management issues inside the main computer system."

The forklift mounted M-Station is utilized in supply chain and data collection applications in distribution, manufacturing, and transportation environments. The M-Station is designed to make data collection a seamless part of the enterprise IT systems, with its wireless 802.11b, printer, and bar-code scanning support. The M-Station is a standard PC with 12 inch, high bright color display, 700MHz processor, 128MB RAM, USB, and serial ports.
