VCXOs and Clocks work with 10 Gigabit Ethernet and SONET.

Press Release Summary:

PECL voltage controlled crystal oscillators and reference clocks support applications for WAN and LAN environments. Model 352 VCXO and Model 652 reference clock have choice of two switched outputs and can combine frequencies from 150 to 1,000 MHz. Model 352 VCXO maintains frequency stability of +/-20 ppm while Model 652 clock maintains stability at +/-30 ppm. Both operate in temperatures of -40 to 85 deg C and have typical phase jitter of less than 1 picosec.

CTS Announces 9mm x 14mm PECL Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillators and Reference Clocks - Both with Choice of Two Switched Frequencies

Elkhart, IN. CTS Corporation (NYSE:CTS), a global supplier of voltage controlled crystal oscillators (VCXOs) and reference clocks for the data communications industry, today introduced Model 352-a 9mm x 14mm surface mount PECL VCXO, and Model 652-a 9mm x 14mm surface mount PECL reference clock--both devices with a choice of two switched outputs. For either model, any two frequencies from 150 MHz to 1,000 MHz can be combined. The output frequency is electrically switched depending on the desired functionality or the protocol of the data being processed. The CTS models are targeted to support applications for WAN and LAN environments where 10 Gigabit Ethernet and SONET protocols are used. They are also suitable for SONET applications where Forward Error Correction (FEC) is used in the same system. The total annual combined global market for products of this type is estimated at $120 million.

"As the result of a smaller but more efficient design, the innovative new Model 352 VCXO offers systems providers the opportunity to save both board space and cost over traditional two separate-package VCXO solutions. We have increased functionality for the 9mm x 14mm footprint while maintaining the same high level of performance," states David W. Holmes, vice president and general manager of CTS Frequency Products. "The CTS 652 clock oscillator family brings new capabilities to users of high frequency reference clocks due to the products' smaller size, more robust performance features and expanded application opportunities. It further provides the system designer with component product cost reductions, board space savings and reduced component inventory," added Holmes.

The CTS Model 352 VCXO maintains excellent frequency stability (plus/minus 20 ppm) over a temperature range of minus 40 to plus 85 degrees C, employs a patent-pending technology resulting in typical phase jitter of less than 1 picosecond and has an enable/disable function. Model 352 operates at a supply voltage of 3.3 volts, and has a minimum absolute pull range of plus/minus 85 ppm, with linearity of better than plus/minus 10%. Similar to the Model 352 VCXO, the CTS Model 652 clock oscillator maintains frequency stability at plus/minus 30 ppm over a temperature range of minus 40 to plus 85 degrees C, will generally experience phase jitter of less than 1 picosecond, has the enable/disable function and operates at a supply voltage of 3.3 volts.

The hermetically sealed precision AT cut quartz crystal resonator, which is housed within an industry standard 9mm x 14mm oscillator package, provides excellent frequency stability over the entire operating temperature range for both CTS models. The assembly process utilizes a construction technique that matches the temperature coefficient of expansion of the customers' circuit boards to assure long product life and reliable performance through harsh environmental cycles.

CTS has been a leading supplier of frequency control products for nearly forty years, designing and manufacturing a wide range of products from basic quartz crystals to highly customized precision oscillators-serving customers in the computer, communications, defense/aerospace, instrumentation and consumer markets worldwide. The Company has continued to design, develop and introduce new frequency control products with several introductions during 2001, including reference clocks, precision oscillators, VCXOs and TCXOs (temperature compensated crystal oscillators) for several applications including datacom network, fiber optic infrastructure and telecom infrastructure.

Product samples and initial production quantities for both Model 352 and 652 are now available. High volume production shipments will begin in May from CTS' facility in Singapore, where the Company has manufactured high-volume, low-cost, precision frequency control products since 1981.
