VCSEL Drivers suit optical DVI/HDMI applications.

Press Release Summary:

Consuming 166 mW of power, single- and 4-channel VCSEL drivers offer flexibility to select variable IBIAS and IMOD values, programmable upper and lower threshold levels for VCSEL fault detection. Available in speeds of 3.125, 2.5, and 1.25 Gbps, 850 nm compatible products feature integrated temperature sensor and multi-standard differential inputs that accept LVDS, LVPECL, and CML formats. Modulation current is 12 mA, and bias current is 11 mA.

Low Power VCSEL Drivers Appeal to Optical DVI/HDMI Applications

Since its launch in January this year, SiRES LABS' highly integrated and low power VCSEL drivers have proven itself highly attractive to DVI/HDMI module producers. SiRES LABS a pioneer in PMD level component integration launched its single and quad channel VCSEL driver in speeds of 3.125, 2.5 and 1.25Gbps respectively for use in backplanes, Fiber Channel, intra system parallel links and OC-192 VSR SONET/SDH links. The 850nm compatible VSCEL drivers can also be used in Digital Visual Interface (DVI) and High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) optical links and extenders.

"Module makers are very attracted to the low power features as this advantage allows for the elimination of external power supply use," said CEO Sean Murphy. The VCSEL driver which consumes only 166mW of power can potentially save up to 40 percent in power consumption and are currently being tested by DVI module makers in Japan and Korea. He also added that the quad channel VCSEL drivers feature four channels integrated into a single chip so there is no need to buy four separate chips for a single link.

Among the key advantages the SiRES VCSEL drivers offer are the flexibility of selecting variable IBIAS and IMOD values programmable upper and lower threshold levels for VCSEL fault detection hence allowing the chip to be easily matched with third-party VCSELs. The added feature of an integration of a temperature sensor enables the chip to be used in applications where temperature compensation is required without the need to use monitor photodiodes.

Other features include multi-standard differential inputs accepting LVDS, LVPECL and CML (standards) formats and compatibility to 850nm VCSELs. It has a modulation current of 12mA and a bias current of 11mA. The disable and enable times are 4ns and 17.7ns respectively and the transmitter ready (TXR) response time is 144ns. The components are available in bare die format.

The use of optical chips such as VCSEL drivers in optical DVI/HDMI links can greatly enhance transmission distances while maintaining the resolution rate between digital sources such as links to LCD's Plasma TV's and Projectors as well as DVD players, PC's and Notebooks.

About SiRES LABS

SiRES LABS was established in January 2002 in Cyberjaya Malaysia. SiRES LABS designs, develops and markets high speed optical microchips for use in the communications and networking industry. Today, SiRES LABS has sales and support offices in Galway Ireland and Cheltenham England.

SiRES LABS is a product company focusing on PHY/PMD layer optical networking and communications components for VSR (very short reach) and SR (short reach) and industrial applications. Our product offering include components such as receivers, transmitters and integrated PMD (transceiver) chips.

SiRES LABS' competitive edge lies in our ability to integrate two or more components into a single chip whilst improving its functionality and parameters. SiRES LABS' in-house developed propriety technology has enabled us to reduce chip sizes significantly and at the same time improve speed and minimise power consumption, all of which are tantalising items on the menu for module makers who are looking for smaller size and more efficient chips.
