Varian, Inc. Debuts New Magnets for Magnetic Resonance Systems

Introduction of 400MHz and 700 MHz Magnets Completes Full Range of Magnets

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 24 / Varian, Inc. (NASDAQ:VARI) today announced that it now offers a full range of magnetic resonance magnets with the introduction of 400MHz and 700MHz Premium Shielded magnets. The company is now able to offer complete, integrated narrow bore and wide bore nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) solutions that include consoles, probes, magnets and software.

The entire range of magnets is compatible with Varian's NMR systems, as well as its suite of cold and room temperature NMR probes.

"Our Magnet Technology Center in the U.K. has demonstrated an incredible amount of engineering expertise and innovative advancement in the past year and a half since Varian acquired Magnex Scientific Limited," said Martin O'Donoghue, senior vice president of Scientific Instruments, Varian, Inc. "We've added a number of magnets into the production line, including our recently introduced 500MHz and 600MHz Premium Shielded magnets, and we are pleased to be able to offer a complete package solution to our NMR customers."

"Our ability to offer a complete range of magnets for our entire suite of NMR instrumentation in such a short amount of time demonstrates our commitment and dedication to our NMR product line," said Garry W. Rogerson, president and CEO, Varian, Inc. "We believe that NMR will play an increasingly larger role in the analytical laboratory as the technology moves towards more compact instrumentation that is more cost effective and easier to use."

The new Varian 400MHz and 700MHz Premium Shielded magnets have a reduced fringe field requiring significantly less laboratory space and a lower ceiling height compared to the previous models of shielded magnets, making NMR technology more accessible to the analytical laboratory. Additionally, important characteristics such as bore size are compatible with other Varian magnets up to 900 MHz, enabling probe and other system components such as automated sample handlers to be centered on one platform. An NMR probe holds the sample within the bore of the magnet, at the center of the magnetic field.

The entire range of NMR magnets is available for immediate order, with delivery dependent on the magnet field strength.

Core to Varian, Inc.'s strategy is strengthening the company's information rich detection (IRD) product portfolio, which provides users with multi-dimensional layers of knowledge critical to their ability to optimize analyses and processes. These products include nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, mass spectrometry (MS) and Fourier Transform-infrared (FT-IR) systems.
