Valimo and G&D Strengthen Partnership through Joint Product Implementation

HELSINKI, Finland and MUNICH, Germany, January 30 - Giesecke & Devrient (G&D), the world's second largest manufacturer of smart cards, is strengthening its partnership with Valimo Wireless, the market leader in mobile phone-based strong authentication and mobile signatures. G&D is the first SIM card vendor to implement the Valimo Mobile Authentication Client (VMAC) on a SIM card.

The VMAC adds significant value for mobile network operators and SIM vendors because it:

ogreatly reduces technical complexity when implementing a mobile signature and PKI authentication infrastructure
oit does not require the deployment of a specific OTA-system
oenables country-specific deployments with a global SIM card profile

"We are very pleased with our cooperation. This first VMAC implementation by G&D shows that our partnership started in 2005 is bearing fruits," says Will Cardwell, CEO at Valimo. "And this further demonstrates Valimo's leadership in enabling mobile operators to become Mobile Signature Service Providers, when they deploy SIM cards featuring the VMAC."

Mobile operators purchasing the VMAC on a SIM card will have a significant advantage in providing mobile signature services through the ETSI-specified MSS web services interface.

With VMAC, mobile signature services do not require mobile operators to commit to a specific (mobile) network protocol or delivery method for graphically-enhanced applications. The signing experience also remains consistent for the whole portfolio of mobile services on offer.

"The VMAC will significantly simplify the client deployment for mobile signature services and provides the right solution for the current market momentum of authentication services," comments Markus Moser, Head of System & Services at G&D.

A mobile signature is the digital equivalent of a signature on a paper contract. It allows the mobile phone to become the pen necessary to sign for almost any e-service, like web banking, government documents, and entry to corporate intranets from outside of the office. Unlike other identification schemes for e-services, mobile signatures require no additional devices and software, and no additional password lists.
