Vaisala Customer Wins Innovation Award at ITS World Congress

Vermont Agency for Transportation has won a "Best New Innovative Practices in 2011" award at the ITS World Congress / ITS America Event in Orlando, Florida. The award is announced annually at the ITS America Annual Meeting. The award highlights new technology advancements in Intelligent Transportation Systems, and serves as a benchmark for the transportation agencies.

Vaisala has provided the Road Weather Stations that are used through the state of Vermont. The system uses Vaisala's Linux based Road Weather Information System (RWIS) platform, with embedded pavement sensors in the road to detect road conditions.

"Vermont Agency of Transportation runs a unique rural application, using Vaisala Road Weather Information System (RWIS) data, to trigger Variable Message Signs (VMS) that notify travelers of road conditions. In the United States, very few agencies provide real-time road weather data directly to drivers via VMS signs", says John Grimm, Regional Market Segment Manager for Americas. "We are very proud to know that our technology has been acknowledged as the most innovative in the industry".

The RWIS-VMS Automation project has been popular in Vermont, encouraging public awareness of road weather technology to improve road conditions and safety.
