Vacuum Circuit Breaker utilizes magnetic actuator.

Press Release Summary:

Featuring embedded pole technology, R-MAG Outdoor Vacuum Circuit Breaker is capable of interrupting up to 40 kA at 38 kV with single vacuum interrupter per phase. Magnetic actuator has only one moving part and requires no regular maintenance. Embedded in solid insulating material, breaker is insulated from external effects of mechanical shock, dust, and humidity. It offers extended capabilities of 10,000 load operations, which is 5x IEEE requirements for endurance capabilities.

ABB Develops First 40kA Magnetically Actuated Outdoor Breaker for 38kV

Utilizing latest in vacuum interrupter technology, R-MAG breaker now capable of interrupting up to 40kA at 38kV with a single vacuum interrupter per phase.

San Diego, California, – ABB, the leading power and automation technology company, today announced the release of the 40kA, 38kV R-MAG outdoor vacuum circuit breaker.

First introduced in 2003 for 15 kV and 27 kV applications, the R-MAG breaker utilizes a magnetic actuator that has only one moving part, offering an improvement over the traditional spring charging mechanisms. Additionally, the magnetic actuator requires no regular maintenance during the life of the breaker, thus reducing costly maintenance intervals, while increasing reliability and safety.

The 38 kV R-MAG breaker takes advantage of embedded pole technology, providing a compact and modular design, suitable for a wide range of climatic and environmental conditions. Embedded in a solid insulating material of high dielectric strength, the vacuum interrupters are insulated from external effects of mechanical shock, dust, and humidity.

Utilizing the latest in vacuum interrupter technology, the R-MAG breaker is now capable of interrupting up to 40kA at 38kV with a single vacuum interrupter per phase. And, as with the entire R-MAG portfolio, this latest addition to the R-MAG family comes with extended capabilities of 10,000 load operations, five times the IEEE requirement for endurance capabilities.

The R-MAG breaker is field proven, with thousands of units in service globally. ABB magnetic actuator technology delivers the state-of-the-art in distribution class breakers, while providing reduced maintenance costs and increased reliability our customers.

This announcement was made at the DistribuTech conference and exhibition, held this year at the San Diego Convention Center. ABB is exhibiting on the DistribuTech show floor in booth # 1201.
