New UV Laser Delivers High Performance/Cost Ratio

Santa Clara, Calif., July 9, 2007 - Coherent, Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq: COHR) expands its popular AVIA product family of UV lasers with a new, intermediate power level model in a package optimized for cost-effective micromachining at high throughput rates. Specifically, the AVIA 355 14 is an all-solid-state Q-switched laser that generates over 14 Watts at 355 nm. In addition to being cost-effective, the new laser's pulse duration of <30 ns and its high beam quality (M2 <1.3), means the AVIA 355-14 also delivers superior materials processing results, in terms of spatial resolution, edge quality and minimized peripheral thermal effects. Plus, the laser supports pulse repetition rates as high as 300 kHz, enabling both vector scanning and very high speed raster scanning applications.

Cost of ownership is minimized through the use of long-lived pump diodes, which are field- replaceable. The frequency-tripling component now has a projected lifetime of providing stable output power for more than 60,000 hours. And the AVIA product reliability is backed up by an industry-leading two-year warranty.

This new laser includes the Posilock(TM) beam position sensor and feedback system, which maximizes beam-pointing accuracy and stability. Additional automation enhancements include total pulse control, and a variety of pulse-shaping features that make this laser well-suited to "power on demand" applications. And, as with all AVIA lasers, the AVIA 355 14 delivers high pulse-to-pulse energy stability, which results in high process uniformity.

The combination of high pulse energy, high repetition rate, and low cost of ownership makes the AVIA 355-14 an ideal laser for a variety of micromachining applications in the microelectronics industry. Examples include chip singulation, scribing and dicing of silicon and low-K materials, via drilling, and solar-cell micromachining. The high peak power of the AVIA 355-14 also enables high-quality drilling, cutting, and scribing of ceramics.
