Original Press Release:

UV Curable Adhesive Systems for Medical Applications

Collano introduces a new, acrylic based UV curable pressure sensitive adhesive. This innovative new product has been tested and approved according to DIN ISO 10093 for Cytotoxicity, Skin Irritation, and Skin Sensitization and is suitable for all direct skin contact applications.

Compared with conventional rubber based hot melt adhesives, the UV curable HMPSA system has many advantages. The system has an MVTR (moisture vapor transmission rate) that is greater than 1000 gsm/day. As a comparison, rubber based hot melt adhesives have an MVTR of approximately 50-80 gsm/day. Another interesting aspect of this adhesive system is that the coating weight of the adhesive does not have a significant influence on the MVTR. These described properties are desirable in wound care products such as incision films. Other products are moisture protection for wounds, patches for transdermal systems and where good transparency and comfort are important. The UV curable HMPSA systems have high heat resistant properties. An example of where heat resistance is required is for steam sterilizable surgical drape tapes.

Standard products show a formulation with relatively high adhesion to skin, and at the same time, they are residue free upon removal. Experienced formulators can also manufacture softer as well as more aggressive modifications of this type of product. In addition, it is also possible to control the MVTR via formulation. Collano adhesives are ecologically and physiologically sound alternatives to solvent-based adhesives. The company is specialized in developing customized products for individual applications in the fields of medical tapes and bandages, elastic bandages, surgical drapes, and medical electrodes. Technical services include coating trials on original materials and optimization of application parameters. Collano is an internationally active innovation company establishing new benchmarks for bonding with specialized adhesives systems. With its headquarters in Switzerland and subsidiaries in Germany, France and the United States, Collano generates revenues of CHF 110 million and employs over 300 people.
