3PAR Delivers Utility Storage for IBM AIX Data Centers

3PAR Utility Storage and IBM System p5 Servers With Advanced Power Virtualization Combine for Improved Utilization and Rapid Provisioning

FREMONT, Calif., July 25 // -- 3PAR(R), the leading provider of Utility Storage, announced today a complete Utility Computing environment with IBM(R) System p5 servers, a platform that doubles server and storage utilization and halves provisioning time and complexity. Through advanced fine-grained virtualization of system resources, both technologies eliminate the restrictive physical boundary conditions that result in the overallocation of purchased system resources, excessive provisioning complexity and disruptive change management. The integration of 3PAR InServ(R) Storage Servers featuring 3PAR Thin Provisioning and 3PAR Dynamic Optimization with IBM System p5 servers featuring Advanced Power Virtualization and Virtual I/O provides customers with a completely virtualized IBM AIX(R) data center in two floor tiles. 3PAR also announced today the availability of 3PAR Multipath I/O (MPIO) for IBM AIX, high-availability software for AIX servers attached to 3PAR InServ arrays.

"3PAR MPIO for AIX will give us the availability we need for our IBM AIX and 3PAR Utility Storage implementation," said Dan Otterness, Director of IT at The Allant Group. With average server and storage utilization rates in the 10% to 30% range, fine-grained virtualization can improve overall utilization several-fold. For example, 3PAR Thin Provisioning can drive capacity utilization to 80% or more. IBM p5 Servers with Advanced Power Virtualization offer greater server utilization by consolidating multiple operating system partitions flexibly onto one or more processors.

"With 3PAR Utility Storage and IBM AIX, you have two best-in-class technologies coming together for unbeatable customer savings and agility," said William Hurley, Senior Analyst at Data Mobility Group. "IT managers of AIX shops should carefully evaluate what this environment can do for them."

The virtual allocation and subsequent optimization of systems also speeds customer applications to market and frees precious human expertise from routine administration. For example, 3PAR Dynamic Optimization provides for the non-disruptive optimization of data service levels by enabling change of disk type, RAID level and other data layout parameters with a single command. This capability eliminates the requirement for costly and disruptive offline data migration. Similarly, IBM Virtual I/O offers the dynamic optimization of I/O resources among multiple operating system partitions within a physical IBM System p5 server.

"For some, utility computing has been intangible and out of reach," said David Scott, President and CEO of 3PAR. "However, the technologies are now available to deliver meaningful utility computing implementations along with compelling cost savings."
