USB Card supports signaling up to 480 Mbps.

Press Release Summary:

Four-port Model PPM-USB2 provides direct Peripheral Component Interconnect to PC/104-Plus bus. It includes 2 OHCI controller cores for full-/low-speed signaling and one EHCI host controller for high-speed signaling. Root hub with 4 downstream facing ports is shared by OHCI and EHCI controller cores. All downstream facing ports can handle 480 Mbps high-speed, 12 Mbps full-speed, and 1.5 Mbps low-speed transactions. Module supports hot insertion and removal of USB cables.

Original Press Release:

PC/104-Plus USB2.0 Card Offers 40x Speed Increase Rugged Industrial 4-port Module Operates from -400 to +850C

August 18, 2004, Arlington, TX. - WinSystems today introduces the PPM-USB2, a high-speed 4-port PC/104-Plus Universal Serial Bus 2.0-compliant (USB2.0) module. This add-in module is 40 times faster than USB 1.x implementations and supports signaling up to 480 Megabits per second (Mbps). The board targets industrial applications that require a variety of USB-compatible peripheral devices. It supports 1.5 Mbps low-speed (LS), 12 Mbps full-speed (FS), and high-speed (HS) 480 Mbps categories on any port on the board. With the HS capability, new applications are open for high-speed network peripherals such as storage, imaging, video, and communication devices.

PRODUCT FEATURES

The PPM-USB2 module uses the NEC (Mountain View, CA) uPD720101 USB2.0 Host Controller. It complies with the Universal Serial Bus Specification revision 2.0 and Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) Specification for full-/low-speed signaling and Intel's Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI) Specification for high-speed signaling. The controller also provides a direct Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) to the PC/104-Plus bus.

The unique quality of the controller is that its architecture is optimized to deliver both high-performance and PCI bus efficiency with the lowest power and smallest size. There are two OHCI controller cores for full-/low-speed signaling and one EHCI host controller for high-speed signaling. A root hub with 4 downstream facing ports is shared by the OHCI and EHCI controller cores. All downstream facing ports can handle high-speed (480 Mbps), full-speed (12 Mbps), and low-speed (1.5 Mbps) transactions. This means that different speed USB devices can be connected without speed or performance compromises on any channel.

The PPM-USB2 supports hot insertion and removal of the USB cables. A smooth turn on feature eliminates in-rush current induced voltage drops during hot-plug events. Also, all ports have over-current protection provided by two National Semiconductor (Santa Clara, CA) LM3526 dual power switches. During a short-circuit/over-current event, the switch dissipating excessive heat is turned off, allowing the second switch to continue to function uninterrupted. A fault on one channel will not affect the other nor will it disrupt power supplied to other PC/104 boards in a stack. No fuses need to be replaced since protection is done electronically.

Each of the ports has a USB 2.0 Type A connector for easy connection and installation.

The PPM-USB2 is designed to support either +5V/3.3V tolerant or +3.3V only PC/104-Plus signaling. A jumper block selects the voltage range. The board draws 250 mA (typical) at +5V and will operate from -400 to +850C for harsh COTS environments.
