SMSC Announces USB 2.0 Flash Media Readers for High-Performance Multimedia and Computing Applications

EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE, SAN JOSE, CA - April 15, 2008 - SMSC (Nasdaq: SMSC), a leading semiconductor company providing innovative system solutions spanning analog, digital and mixed-signal technologies, today announced two new families of USB 2.0 Flash media readers designed to enable greater throughput and flexibility in consumer electronics and computing applications. The USB2240 and USB2250 Hi-Speed USB 2.0 controller families support a wide range of Flash media cards with improved data transfer performance, delivering higher data throughput and catering to new high speed formats.

The popularity of USB 2.0 makes the technology a preferred interface for removable storage media in consumer electronics and computing platforms. SMSC's new generation of USB Flash media controllers reduce bottlenecks with throughput speeds up to 35 MB/s - nearly twice as fast as previous generations of SMSC Flash media controllers. This bandwidth increase enables a host of rich-content applications, including streaming video, fast multimedia file transfer and higher performance of computing technologies like ReadyBoost(TM) for Windows Vista®. In trials using ReadyBoost, a technology that employs external Flash memory to boost performance in the Vista operating system, SMSC's new Flash media readers delivered significantly better performance than systems without high-performance Flash media readers.

The USB2240 and USB2250 were designed to improve performance of Hi-Speed Flash media types such as MemoryStick PRO-HG(TM), Secure Digital(TM) (SD), 8-bit MultiMedia Card(TM) (MMC) and CompactFlash® (CF) UDMA, but are capable of supporting all popular Flash formats in a single device. With read and write support for 24 popular Flash media formats, including CompactFlash, SecureDigital, SmartMedia(TM) (SM), Memory Stick(TM) (MS), xD-Picture Card(TM) (xD) and Multimedia Card families, the new product families support virtually any applications that need to support Flash media cards. In addition, the USB2250 can also read different Flash media formats simultaneously, adding even more flexibility for end-user applications.

"The USB2240 and USB2250 USB Flash media controller families are the latest members of a proven, successful product line from SMSC," said Mark Bode, Vice President of Connectivity Marketing at SMSC. "With improved performance, support for new card formats and optimizations specific to targeted applications, these new product families demonstrate SMSC's ongoing commitment to leadership in USB connectivity."

Like many USB connectivity solutions from SMSC, the USB2240 and USB2250 families are fully integrated, single-chip solutions optimized for high performance applications, such as notebook/desktop computing, consumer audio/video equipment, portable consumer electronics, set-top boxes, printers, digital TVs and PC monitors. The USB2240 family, designed with space and cost efficiency in mind, offers an ultra-compact solution using multiplexed Flash media interfaces to deliver superior performance in a 36-pin QFN package for price-sensitive consumer electronics. The USB2250 is a full-featured Flash media reader and writer, with dedicated Flash media interfaces, in a 128-pin VTQFP package to support applications requiring access to multiple Flash media types concurrently.

SMSC's USB2240 and USB2250 families include industrial temperature qualified devices supporting -40° to 85° Celsius, which enables improved thermal characteristics that are required for many embedded applications.

These new products will be demonstrated in SMSC's booth #2126 at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose, April 15-17, 2008.
