Original Press Release:

Urethane Kit Allows Fast Repairs to Damaged SBR Conveyor Belts

DANVERS, MA — The new Devcon® R-Flex™ Belt Repair Kit from ITW Polymers Adhesives North America (formerly ITW Devcon) is formulated to quickly repair tears, gouges, and holes in styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) heavy weight conveyor belts.  Offering excellent abrasion resistance as well as superior adhesion, the R-Flex urethane compound is easy to mix and cures quickly — the repaired belt can be back in service just 90 minutes after application.

In addition to the R-Flex resin and curing agent, each kit (available in 4-lb. and 1.5-lb. sizes) includes a 2-part surface conditioner, a mix bucket, a wooden paddle, a scrub pad, gloves, paper towels, and a plastic spatula.  R-Flex, which has a 2-year shelf life, mixes as liquid and within 3-4 minutes becomes non-sagging, self-leveling putty.  The mixture should be stirred with the wooden paddle.  Working time is 7-9 minutes, and functional cure is 1.5 hours.  The 4-lb. kit of R-Flex is enough to cover up to 440 square inches at a thickness of ¼ inch.  The tough putty can also be used to protect hinged and solid plate fasteners (after adequate preparation).

Preparation of the belt surface starts with abrading and cleaning.  Devcon Cleaner Blend 300 (sold separately) should be poured on and around the areas to be repaired, wiped with the scrub pad, and then wiped dry.  After the area has been roughened with an abrasive grinding wheel to release contaminants and grit, more cleaner blend should be applied, and then wiped off.  Next, Devcon Surface Conditioner (included in the kit), which maximizes adhesion, must be mixed and then daubed thinly onto the repair area.  The surface must dry a minimum of 3 minutes before applying product.  The conditioner contains a fluorescence that allows for visual inspection of the prepped area before the R-Flex compound is applied with the spatula.

ITW Polymers Adhesives North America produces engineered compounds for repair and protection of surfaces subject to wear and abrasion.  The company also offers a comprehensive line of adhesives for OEM assembly and machinery repair, including high-strength epoxies and advanced methacrylates.
