Durethane(TM) Foams and Solids in Wide Use for Banking Machine Applications

Advanced materials from MPC are durable and self-cleaning and provide precision of movement

Cranston, R.I., December 7, 2005--MPC announces the availability of Durethane(TM) M, Durethane F, and Durethane S custom-formulated urethanes for banking machine applications. Designers of precision machines will benefit from using these materials because of their durability, their high and customizable coefficient of friction, and their ability to be customized for electrostatic dissipation (ESD) properties. Durethane urethane polymers are in widespread use in the banking field for rollers and wheels, pick pads, and foam conveyors.

"We have decades of experience customizing urethane," says John Roderick, President of MPC. "As the market for paper-processing banking equipment grows, and as the equipment requires higher speeds and greater precision, we foresee an increasing demand for high-end urethane components."

Banking machine applications include currency handling, check processing, billing, and other paper-handling tasks. The equipment requires precise movement at high speeds, with a constant coefficient of friction so as to avoid jamming or double-feeds. Traditional rubber rollers and belts generate tribocharge from friction. They also pick up lint and dirt in use, requiring frequent maintenance or replacement.

Durethane materials are ideal for these applications. Durethane F is a chemically blown cellular foam with a closed cell structure. It is widely used as a material for banking equipment conveyor belts to bridge gaps between rollers and to provide reliable transfer at a precise coefficient of friction. Durethane M is a mechanically mixed, microcellular foam with a uniform and mostly open cell structure. Both materials have an excellent compression set, a high coefficient of friction, and unique self-cleaning properties. Durethane S is a solid elastomer that provides high heat dissipation and resistance to wear in paper-handling and transport applications. All Durethane formulations are customizable for conductive properties.

Properties of these materials include:
Durometer Density Coefficient of friction Resistivity (ohm.cm)
Durethane M 1A-90A 1-60pcf 0.8-1.6 E7-E10
Durethane F 1A-90A 1-60pcf 0.8-1. E7-E10
Durethane S 5 Shore A-80 Shore D 1.1-1.30g/mt 0.6-2.5 E5-E10
Foam Conveyor 20A-50A 25-50pcf 1.0-1.6 E7-E9
