University of Virginia Health System Expands Deployment of Barco Displays and Online QA Software

One of the United States' most prestigious healthcare systems is continuing to grow its fleet of Barco's medical imaging displays, including the Coronis Fusion 6MP DL diagnostic displays, MDRC-2120 clinical review stations, and the company's industry-leading, web-based Quality Assurance software offering intervention-free QA for medical imaging displays.

Duluth, Georgia, USA - Medical imaging specialist Barco announced today that it is supplying the University of Virginia Health System (UVA) with a growing number of diagnostic and DICOM-compliant clinical review displays throughout the institution as part of the facility's ongoing technology purchases. With regulatory bodies heightening their scrutiny of medical data, precise results are more critical than ever in the reading room. More than 100 displays are connected via Barco's MediCal QAWeb software, the industry's first and only online service for automated quality assurance of PACS displays, providing remote, secure management to ensure consistent display performance and image quality.

The health system initially chose Barco when it decided to replace its CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors a few years ago, with the goal of decreasing heat, and subsequently increasing the lifespan, of its PACS displays. Upon conducting a preference study with its radiologists, Spencer Gay, MD, Professor of Radiology and Residency Program Director at UVA, stated that he was impressed by Barco's image quality. "The Coronis Fusion 6MPs have been a big success for us. The brightness, luminance stability and overall reliability are excellent. The ability to switch back and forth between a grayscale chest X-ray to a color ultrasound with no degradation in image quality or brightness is amazing. Early on, I was very critical of the concept of doing both on the same display because the grayscale images were not high quality. Then, Barco developed the 6MP - it's the first display that I've felt confident could do both well."

The Coronis Fusion 6MP DL displays are among a growing family of high-resolution diagnostic displays for use in PACS environments, featuring the industry's first 30" color panel, which can be used as two seamless 3MP heads or one widescreen display. Its high-resolution color/grayscale image presentation is ideal for multi-modality imaging on a single screen, including CT, MR, echocardiogram and cath images. Barco is continuing to expand this product line with the introduction of the Coronis Fusion 10MP.

UVA uses Barco's MDRC-2120 clinical review displays throughout the hospital, including the hand and spine center, cancer center, thoracic cardiovascular area, surgical suites, the ICU and other departments that rely heavily on clear and precise medical imaging to deliver the best patient care. The MDRC-2120 features a high-quality LCD panel to present medical images with better contrast, higher brightness and a wider viewing angle than conventional computer monitors. The display is DICOM-compliant "out of the box," and offers long-term image consistency as a result of continuous LCD backlight stabilization.

Sean Moynihan, Director of Radiology Information Systems for the health system, is particularly focused on the asset management capabilities of Barco's MediCal QAWeb. The online medical display Quality Assurance software enables Moynihan to assess performance, age, luminance and other factors regarding the "health" of the hospital's displays via a centralized network software application. "Before QAWeb, I had to physically inspect each monitor to adjust a parameter or check on an abnormality. Now, I can perform a number of tests and adjustments remotely, many of them automatically, increasing overall productivity. With respect to aging, we now have clear, reliable data to make budgeting and procurement decisions."

"We've enjoyed partnering with UVA on their technology refresh and share their enthusiasm regarding the incredible time and cost savings they've achieved with our MediCal QAWeb software. It really allows them to do more with less, while maintaining a high standard of patient care," commented Kurt DeYoung, Director of Sales Medical Imaging for Barco North America.
