UNIST to Demonstrate Near Dry Machining at IMTS

Grand Rapids, MI: In response to continued inquiry and growing interest, UNIST, Inc. will once again demonstrate Near Dry Machining as a part of their IMTS exhibit in September. The company will combine their Micro-Fluidization(TM) Systems used for fluid control and delivery, with their own high efficiency vegetable based lubricants - Coolube® 2210 and 2210EP. The UNIST systems will perform CNC drilling and milling on a variety of materials, including aluminum and tool steel. Additionally, UNIST Micro-Fluidization Systems can be seen in use for Near Dry Sawing at the show. The UNIST Exhibit can be seen at Booth B-7546.

Near Dry Machining, also known as MQL (minimal quantity lubrication), can often be substituted for traditional wet machining. According to Wally Boelkins, the company president, one of UNIST's missions is to assist companies in making this transition. In Near Dry Machining, small amounts of a high quality lubricant are applied carefully and accurately to the interface where the cutting tool meets the material being worked, to reduce friction, remove heat, and cool. Although the process can be performed with water based and synthetic lubricants, the best overall performance and versatility is achieved when a highly refined vegetable based lubricant is used.

UNIST Coolube 2210 is specifically designed for Near Dry Machining / MQL processes. When used with a UNIST Micro-Fluidization System or other MQL application system, Coolube reduces fluid consumption up to 98%, improves tool life and removes all excess fluid considerations such as handling, treatment, and disposal by permitting TLL (total loss lubrication).

To equip a machine to perform Near Dry Machining / MQL, the flood cooling components are disabled or removed. A small Micro-Fluidization system is added to precisely control the fluid. This is most typically done after market as a retro-fit, though some CNC machine manufacturers now include an MQL system as an option for their customers.

UNIST manufacturers the most complete line in the industry of systems which can be used in Near Dry Machining / MQL. Using the Uni-Max(TM), Uni-Mist(TM), and Thru-Tool Micro-Fluidization Systems, dozens of configurations are possible for the integration of Near Dry processes to specific operations. UNIST Systems can be integrated to almost any machine, and the scope for Near Dry processes is almost limitless.
