Unipolar Switches are programmed in-field or at factory.

Press Release Summary:

Dual-wire, Hall-effect unipolar switches A114x and A118x use chopper-stabilization technique on DABIC5 BiCMOS process to achieve magnetic stability over operating temperature range. Field-programmable A118x lets users externally trim operate points, while factory-programmed A114x provides preset magnetic operate points. Both series offer inherent diagnostic capabilities and internal Zener clamp that protects against over-voltage conditions on supply line.

Allegro Introduces Next-Generation Two-Wire Unipolar Switches

Available as Factory Programmed or Field Programmable

Worcester, MA, May 28, 2004 - Allegro MicroSystems, Inc. is proud to introduce a new family of factory- and field-programmable two-wire Hall-effect unipolar switches targeted at the automotive and industrial markets.

The A118x represents Allegro's line of field-programmable, two-wire, unipolar switches. Since programming is performed after final packaging, customers are able to externally trim operate points for the purpose of dialing out mechanical stack-ups, which may result from manufacturing process tolerances. This advanced feature allows for optimization of sensor switching performance.

The A114x family complements the A118x by providing solutions with preset magnetic operate points, which are guaranteed over temperature. Although end-of-line programming at the factory produces a tighter part-to-part distribution, the final sensor design still has tolerance stack-ups that will require a higher degree of design effort to guarantee proper operation.

In both cases, customers benefit from reduced manufacturing costs and liability by eliminating one wire in the application. Additionally there is the advantage of inherent diagnostic capabilities as the two distinct output current levels can be interpreted by a controller unit whereby detecting open, short, and indeterminate states. These devices are specifically designed for use in applications that must endure harsh automotive environments.

The A114x and A118x use a patented high-frequency chopper-stabilization technique on Allegro's new DABIC5 BiCMOS process to achieve magnetic stability over a wide operating temperature range. The robust on-chip protection of these devices enables customers to use fewer discrete components to protect against ESD and EMC events. An internal Zener clamp protects against over-voltage conditions on the supply line.

The A114x and A118x are fully qualified for production with high volume production lead times currently at 22 weeks. The "E" temp devices are available at $0.57 / unit @ 25k units per year; the "L" temp devices are available at $0.65 / unit @ 25k units per year.
