MGE Brings A New Standard to Power Reliability With the New Galaxy PW Scalable Power Solution

New Three-Phase UPSs protect up to 300 Industrial Servers Against Damaging "Power Events"

COSTA MESA, Calif. - July 23, 2002 - MGE UPS SYSTEMS, a global leader in high-availability power solutions, today introduced its scalable Galaxy PW Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), one of the most robust power protection solutions specifically designed to meet the growing power demands of the critical process infrastructure. The Galaxy's "ready for the future" scaleable architecture, allows users to purchase just the power they need and scale up as their infrastructure grows. Protecting process control and other industrial computing processes, MGE's Galaxy PW sets the new standard in "always on" power demanded by today's digital economy.

The on-line Galaxy PW represents the next generation of MGE's Galaxy series of which there are over 5,000 installations worldwide. Perfecting the inherent reliability standards of the previous Galaxy UPSs, the new family includes six scaleable models in power ratings from 100 to 225 KVA. With an innovative modular design, paralleling power modules for capacity or redundancy is quickly accomplished eliminating the need for extra paralleling equipment - saving time and money. To match load profiles, the Galaxy has a 0.9+ output power factor. In addition, MGE designed the new Galaxy with one of the industry's smallest footprints. The 225 kVA model requires only 11 square feet of space - making it one of the highest power density UPSs available today. For extended battery run time, four additional battery cabinets can be added to achieve over an hour of back up time.

Since batteries have proven to be a weak link in any UPS system, MGE has incorporated advanced battery management into the new Galaxy PW. Through automated load testing of the batteries, the Galaxy PW can determine precise battery performance parameters and alert operators to any irregularities before they have a chance to affect the UPS performance. In addition, predictive failure analysis of the batteries is automatically performed allowing users to know exactly when they should replace their batteries.

For generator operation, the Galaxy PW boasts a truly generator friendly design due to its low kVAR input filter that limits reactive current fed to the generator. This technology helps assure UPS generator compatibility improving system reliability and greatly reducing generator over-sizing requirements - resulting in significant cost savings.

The versatile Galaxy PW interfaces with the industry's leading universal communication protocols and incorporates four communication slots to support SNMP, J-Bus/ModBus, TCP/IP and (RS232-RS485) protocols for easy interfacing with most devices.

Operating with MGE's inclusive Solution-Pac power management software, the Galaxy PW can gracefully control and shutdown multiple servers over the network. In addition, the Galaxy PW can be programmed to issue server shutdown commands via XML tags when MGE's new "webi-card" is installed.

The front-panel LCD display offers easy-to-understand measurements and diagnostic messages as well as an LED mimic diagram. In addition, password protected personalization menus provide the ability to specify modes of operation, warning thresholds for battery operation, and other customer tailored features. All UPS parameters and customization menus are available at the touch of a button.

The new Galaxy PW systems are supported by MGE's extensive field service organization that includes over 120 field service engineers located in every major city across the U.S.

The Galaxy PW UPS is UL-1778 and cUL (Canada) approved and conforms to FCC Class A parts, 15 sub parts. The new Galaxy also meets ISO 9001 design and manufacturing standards. Available now, the Galaxy PW family pricing starts at $35,000 and includes a one-year warranty.
