American Power Conversion Announces New Generation of Performance, Density Optimized Power Protection for Servers and Networks

APC's Fourth-generation Smart-UPS Rack-mount Units Offer Increased Power Density, and Enhanced Management Capabilities

WEST KINGSTON, R.I. - June 30, 2003 - American Power Conversion (APC) announces the next generation of its award winning Smart-UPS® line of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) with the new 2200VA and 3000VA rack-mount models. This new design occupies only 2U of valuable rack space, while providing up to 2700 watts of power, making them an ideal solution for rack optimized servers, server blades, and storage devices. The new models incorporate an advanced feature set that provides enhanced power conditioning and management capabilities for the protection of critical business applications, data and equipment from utility power disturbances.

As new additions to APC's integrated rack, power and cooling architecture, InfraStruXure(TM), these models offer an open and adaptable solution for network critical physical infrastructure in server rooms, wiring closets and other small to medium sized computing environments.

"Our Smart-UPS family of products has long been an industry benchmark for reliable, manageable power protection for networking applications," said Ed Bednarcik, vice president of APC's Business Networks Group. "This next generation rack-optimized design builds on these core attributes while addressing the need for increased power density as more IT equipment is packed into the rack. With enhanced manageability and improved performance even in adverse thermal environments, these new Smart-UPS rack-mount models are also incorporated into APC's Type A InfraStruXure architecture system."

Highlighted features of the next generation of Smart-UPS units include:
o Higher power output - With over 20 percent more wattage than existing APC units, the new design has a class leading power density for the increasing power requirements of today's IT racks. The 120V units also offer two (2) NEMA 5-20R receptacles for the larger input plugs of higher power servers and switches;
o Extended range AVR - Maintains high quality computer grade power even if the utility voltage drops by 30 percent without using critical battery power;
o Improved Battery Management - A temperature compensated battery charging system with redundant overcharge protection offers longer life in adverse conditions,
o Self-contained, Hot-swappable battery module - A single connection allows for even easier battery replacement without powering down the connected load, saving time and service expense;
o Full PowerChute® Business Edition functionality with serial or USB - easy-to-install and use software performs automatic, unattended system shutdown as well as important diagnostic and remote management features such as UPS status and testing;
o New sleek design with improved ventilation - All units are black in color and feature an advanced 16 segment bar graph display and provide front-to-back airflow for optimum cooling in enclosed racks.

In addition to these features, the new Smart-UPS rack-mount units offer unparalleled manageability with proactive alarms, a built-in emergency power off (EPO) circuit, newly enhanced VA/Watt load meter and a comprehensive array of power management accessories supported through the unit's SmartSlot. Additional accessories include APC's Network Management Card products, which provide standards-based monitoring, configuration, control, and event handling for APC UPSs, and PowerChute remote shutdown for systems over a 10/100BaseT network. The new modules are integrated onto a single UPS SmartSlot card and have features like a built-in modem for dial in, out of band management and environmental management capabilities for infrastructure management.

APC's Smart-UPS models offer a comprehensive two-year warranty and a lifetime $150,000 equipment protection policy. When purchased as a complete InfraStruXure(TM) solution the warranty is extended an additional year. These new models have undergone extensive testing by the WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Lab) and carry the new "Designed for Microsoft Server 2003" logo. Estimated resale pricing of the 2200VA and 3000VA models is $1,050 and $1,250, respectively.

These new models also carry the X-certification logo. This logo provides the peace of mind of complete compatibility with APC's InfraStruXure architecture.
