American Power Conversion Announces New Rack-Mount Smart - UPS® Models with Enhanced Features

A Highly Reliable Fourth Generation Design Enhances the Availability and Manageability of Business Networks

WEST KINGSTON, R.I. -April 28, 2003 - American Power Conversion (APC) announced today that it has enhanced its award-winning Smart-UPS line of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) with the introduction of new 750, 1000 and 1500VA 2U rack-mount models. The advanced feature set includes a comprehensive display, extended range automatic voltage regulation (AVR), pure sine wave output, intelligent battery management, and convenient user replaceable hot-swappable battery modules. The Smart-UPS 1500 RM 2U is included as a component of APC's new InfraStruXure(TM) architecture, which integrates power, cooling, racks, and management products into single systems.

"Smart-UPS offers best in class reliability and forward-looking manageability to provide an ideal power protection strategy for a wide variety of IT equipment," said Ed Bednarcik, vice-president of APC's Business Networks Solutions Group. "In addition, Smart-UPS is now part of the new InfraStruXure architecture and provides an open, adaptable integrated solution that is designed for today's IT needs and easily accommodates growth for the applications of the future."

These versatile Smart-UPS rack mount 2U models may be mounted in a variety of network equipment, telecom, and IT racks including most two-post and four-post designs. This Smart-UPS rack-mount line is a primary protection choice for business servers, blade servers, network switches, WiFi (WWAN, WLAN) networks, VoIP installations and other rack mount networking equipment. They are ideal in a centralized environment such as a small data center, small business, branch office and retail store, or in distributed power protection architecture for targeted availability in a large data center or enterprise.

The new Smart-UPS rack-mounts offer serial and USB communication ports, allowing users to seamlessly transition from the use of serial ports to USB. APC's Smart-UPS family integrates into the Windows Server 2003 environment easily and has obtained the "Designed for Windows Server 2003" logo. All units ship with APC's PowerChute Business Edition software, enabling IT administrators to provide safe system shutdown and UPS management for servers and workstations. This next generation UPS management software is designed to make managing multiple UPSs over a network easy with a centralized console view, mass configuration of UPS settings and recommended actions.

Further, native Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 operating systems are supported right out of the box with no software installation. The built-in expansion slot integrates with APC's SmartSlot power management accessories including the Network Management Card product line, providing the ability to configure, control, and monitor their APC UPSs via standards-based management such as Web, SNMP, WAP, Telnet, DHCP and Syslog. Optional features to the card include environmental monitoring and modem functionality without the need for an additional smart-slot or expansion chassis.

The extended range AVR enhances the overall availability of the UPS by boosting the incoming voltage up to 30% without using the battery thus protecting against brownout situations and preserving the battery life. When on battery, the Smart-UPS models provide a pure sine wave output that simulates the input power from the utility and ensures compatibility with sensitive electronics. The comprehensive display on the Smart-UPS 750, 1000 and 1500 models include battery charge and load meters that allow network managers to determine the status of the UPS at a glance. When the batteries need to be replaced, it can be accomplished quickly and easily without powering down the system using APC's convenient battery module.

APC's Smart-UPS 750, 1000 and 1500VA rack mount models are currently available in most countries worldwide. Estimated resale pricing of the new units are $419, $545 and $669, respectively.
