Bivar Introduces Industry First High Powered 400nm Ultraviolet LED

IRVINE, Calif. -Feb. 7, 2002 -BivarOpto(TM), the Optoelectronics Division of Bivar, Inc., has introduced the industry's first high powered ultraviolet LEDs featuring typical intensities from
500 mcds (700 mcds maximum), with a typical stable wavelength of 400nm. The new Ultraviolet LED Series is ideally suited for a wide range of specialty applications including currency validation in vending and change machines, automotive instrumentation, counterfeit bill detection/bill validation, medical equipment, high-pressure hydraulic leak detection systems, test and measurement and security/biometrics.

Solid-state ultraviolet (UV) emission provides increased energy efficiency and related cost economies, as well as longer life over traditional, bulky, non-solid state UV lighting. BivarOpto's
UV LEDs offers a desirable alternative for many types of portable or battery operated test and detection devices. For example, in the medical field, UV LEDs can not only be used for sterilization, but also as light sources for lower spectrum analyzers. In the security and law enforcement fields the solid-state UV light can be used over traditional methods to detect counterfeit bills and provide accurate finger print identification.

The new Ultraviolet LED Series features a 30-degree viewing angle and stable 400nm wavelength ranges from 390nm to 410nm. Other performance characteristics include an operating temperature range of -25°C to +85°C and a resistance to shock and vibrations not afforded by traditional filament lamps. Available in industry standard discrete SMD and through-hole packages including T-1 (3 mm) and T1-3/4(5mm) sizes, the new series will also be offered in Bivar's proprietary PIX-TEK(TM) and MAKO(TM) Super Flux packages.

"To our knowledge, there is no other UV LED on the market capable of producing 500 mcds at 20mA with a stable 400nm wavelength," said Anthony Vilgiate, Bivar Vice President
Strategic Business Development. "We have been very gratified with the initial response from our core customer base and surprised by the wide-ranging potential for this technology".

Immediately available from stock, typical pricing in production quantities is $2.35 each.
