Original Press Release:

New Cleaning Technology for the Medical Industry - Branson OMNI Biotek 1012

The Omni Biotek 1012 is a high performance ultrasonic wash, rinse and dry system that is specifically engineered for the medical and biotech industry. It is a fully-configured ultrasonic cleaning and rinsing system with a built-in HEPA filtered, hot air dryer. The equipment incorporates quality materials and workmanship along with features that enhance precision cleaning and drying capability. The Omni Biotek's array of features combined with a compact footprint makes it an ideal work cell system.

Precision cleaning is accomplished in the first station's ultrasonic wash tank. Dependant on the application, the wash tank can be equipped with a choice of different frequency ultrasonics ranging from 40 kHz to 170 kHz. The wash tank also has thermostatically controlled heat to raise the solution temperature up to 150° F.

Following the ultrasonic wash tank are two counter-flowing cascade rinse tanks. Fresh rinse water entering the final rinse tank overflows into the first rinse tank. This counter-flowing feature provides excellent rinsing while substantially reducing water consumption. The first rinse tank comes equipped with a choice of different frequency ultrasonics, ranging from 40 kHz to 170 kHz. The frequency choice tailors the ultrasonic rinsing ability to the application. The ultrasonic energy in the first rinse drives off any residual soils and cleaning chemistry to completely rinse fine details, blind holes, or crevices on the parts. The over-flowing fresh water final rinse in tank three assures thoroughly clean and rinsed parts prior to entering the dryer chamber. Both rinse tanks have thermostatically controlled heat.

The drying chamber utilizes both elevated temperature and rapid air movement to produce dry parts. The dryer chamber's recirculated hot air is moved through digitally controlled heating elements, and then through a high efficiency HEPA filter element before being returned to the chamber. The chamber is furnished with a 3" vent duct to facilitate moist air removal.

How does ultrasonic technology work?
Ultrasonic scrubbing or liquid cavitation is the formation and implosion of microscopic vacuum bubbles that gently remove contaminate from a substrate. In conjunction with solvents and aqueous chemistries along with heat assist in emulsifying and containing contaminates. Ultrasonic cleaning is an encompassing technology, where many other scrubbing technologies are line-of-sight dependant. Ultrasonic sound waves fill the bath with alternating low and high pressure zones at frequencies of 20-180 KHz. During the low pressure zone, liquid molecules are pulled apart forming microscopic vacuum bubbles, and then on the high side of the ultrasonic wave, the bubble implodes. The implosion of the vacuum bubble releases energy, dislodging adhered contaminates from the substrate.

A typical solvent or aqueous process will consist of a cleaning stage, then a rinsing
stage, followed by drying. Fixturing of the substrates to optimize cleaning and
ergonomics for handling is critical, along with matching throughput requirements. Footprint, facilities availability such as water, power, air, ventilation, and drains also impact the selection of the best cleaning technology and equipment.
