UltraFlex Uses Induction to Preheat Inconel-Based Alloys to up to 1000°C in Less Than 30 Secs

[Apr 28, 2020] The successful, cost- and time-efficient use of induction heating for academic research has recently been demonstrated by UltraFlex Power Technologies. The company - a leading manufacturer of induction heating solutions - had been asked to set up a test in its application laboratory aiming at proving whether an Inconel blade can be heated to up to 1000°C in less than 30 secs.

UtraFlex application testing aims at identifying the induction equipment and heating parameters that are most appropriate for each specific induction heating process. At the conclusion of testing, all samples are returned to the customer for evaluation along with a well-documented report, video and proposal.

The Inconel plate had to be used in academic research and a requirement for the heating was to preheat only the first 2 mm of the plate to the target temperature of 1000°C. Fast heating was another requirement, so as to prevent damage to the whole workpiece.

An induction heating equipment from the UltraFlex UltraHeat SB series had been considered most appropriate for this heating scenario. UltraHeat SB are high frequency induction heaters operating at frequency from 700 kHz to 1.2 MHz and perfect for soldering and brazing small components and parts such as circuit board connectors, RF Connectors, and cable end connectors. They enable controlled and localized heating of small size parts.

At power output of 1.65 kW, it took as little as 30 seconds to preheat the Inconel blade to the required target temperature. Thanks to the time-efficient heating, there was no damage to the workpiece.

Which is more, because of the lack of open flame, this preheating operation had been completely green, with no waste heat, smoke or noxious emissions.
