Murata Introduces World's Smallest RFID Reader-Writer Module

UHF Gen 2 Module Provides an Easy and Cost Effective Solution for Stationary and Mobile RFID Reader-Writers

Smyrna, GA,- Murata Electronics North America, a world-leading innovator in electronics and the largest global supplier of ceramic passive components, today introduced the LXRW series, the world's smallest ultra high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) reader-writer module. The combination of its small size, functionality and fast integration make the cost-effective LXRW ideally suited for stationary and handheld UHF Gen 2 RFID reader-writer units, including cell phones and other devices that require embedded RFID capabilities.

Measuring only 23mm x 13mm x 2.8mm, Murata's new surface mount RFID module is 85 percent smaller in footprint and 92 percent smaller by volume when compared to existing reader-writer modules with the same output power. Despite its dramatically reduced size, the LXRW is feature rich, offering complete RF and baseband functionality. Included in the module is the processing unit, antenna matching circuit, power amplifier, random access memory, Gen 2 firmware and oscillator. In addition, it has three serial port options and 100mW maximum output power for ranges up to two feet with a small size antenna.

Also, as a surface mount device (SMD), the LXRW series can be directly mounted onto a printed circuit board (PCB) using a standard surface-mount assembly line. Other reader-writer modules typically have a connector which requires a manual connection to a motherboard within the reader production line. Murata's new module eliminates this costly and time-consuming process.

"Murata's LXRW series provides a quick time-to-market solution and is a technological breakthrough as it furthers the ability of the UHF RFID market to gain ubiquitous use in commercial and consumer applications," stated Gerry Hubers, business development manager - new products for Murata Electronics North America. "By including all the desired features in a tiny module and making it easy to install, Murata's customers benefit by using a cutting edge product that saves space, time and money."

The LXRW reader-writer series sample is available for $120 with significantly lower prices available with volume orders. For additional information please contact Murata Electronics or stop by the company's booth #361 at the RFID Journal Show.
