Valenite Introduces New Two-Tone Insert System for Cast Iron Turning Applications

As part of its aggressive product development and launch programs, Valenite LLC announces the further expansion of its ValTURN(TM) Turning System with the introduction of the new IronOrca(TM) VP1505 grade. The IronOrca VP1505 features a two-tone gray/black coating that easily identifies used edges to make indexing fast and error-proof. The grade is ideal for high speed finish and rough turning of gray and ductile cast irons in applications typically above 1000 SFM and 800 SFM, respectfully, while also being suitable for machining hardened steel > Rc 40. The new VP1505 augments Valenite's existing VP1510 tooling grade, giving users an expanded range of solutions to best optimize performance in iron turning. The IronOrca VP1505 provides more predictable tool life and reliable performance, and in customer tests, has consistently demonstrated a productivity increase of up to 50% as compared with other, competitive K05/K10 coated carbide grades.

The VP1505 provides a unique two-tone black & gray coating design, resulting from its thick, multilayer MT-CVD TiCN/Al2O3 coating that also incorporates an added gray TiC layering on the cutting edge flank to make wear recognition easier. The aluminum oxide coating has a smooth, polished rake surface to minimize material build-up on the cutting edge, and specifically, to prevent ferritic nodular iron from adhering to cutting edge. In addition, the combination of coating layers provides excellent abrasive wear resistance. The hard, micrograin substrate resists wear and the effects of high temperatures generated in high speed turning applications. The tool performance characteristics also include enhanced flaking resistance-all combined in a single grade to help deliver lower costs per part, reduced downtime and dependable part quality.

The initial offering of the IronOrca VP1505 includes four styles of ISO Positive single sided chipbreakers geometries encompassing the PF4, PM2, PM3 and PM4 designs, plus four ANSI Negative double sided inserts with M5, M8, R4 and a Flat-top style. The selection of chipbreaker styles is then combined with various shapes such as square, diamond variations, triangle and trigon, plus a choice of relief angles and three tolerance classes that result in over 100 individual insert options.

The addition of the IronOrca VP1505 grade expands Valenite's range of products targeted at applications for cast iron machining to three, including the VP1510 and the VP5515. Each grade along with the particulars of the geometries, shapes, etc., provide specific performance characteristics for chip control, impact resistance in continuous or interrupted cuts, for surface finish control in fine finishing operations to high feed roughing, and for various metal removal rates.

The full selection of the Valenite ValTURN Turning System includes systems for steel, stainless steels, cast irons, high temperature alloys, aluminum and non-ferrous alloys, and hardened part turning applications. Complementing the inserts are ValTURN ProGRIP(TM) toolholders that offer stability, accuracy and versatility in an easy-to-use format.

As with all Valenite products, the ValTURN Turning System tools are supported through the company's ValPro Customer Service group for ordering, pricing and delivery scheduling, plus a technical staff offering continuously updated product and application data, and recommendations to optimize metal cutting productivity.
