Hardinge Introduces Its All-New ELITE 27 MS Turning Center with Sub Spindle at EASTEC '07

ELMIRA, NEW YORK: The ELITE 27 MS turning center (built in Elmira New York) will be unveiled in Hardinge's booth 1351 at EASTEC 2007 at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, MA, May 22 - 24, 2007.

The new ELITE 27 MS turning center is unlike all machine tools with a 27mm bar capacity spindle. It comes standard with many features that other manufacturers charge extra for- Hardinge's world-renowned unique jaw chuck/collet-ready spindle, a 16-station turret top plate with live tooling, C-axis contouring, and a sub spindle. The impressive machine weight of 7,820-lb (3,547-kg), along with the patented Harcrete®-reinforced cast iron base, provides optimum rigidity, stiffness and high damping for exacting part tolerances and finishes.

A Hardinge ELITE 27 MS turning center will allow the user to reduce operating expenses, while improving flexibility and throughput.

Unique Spindle Design
The main spindle features a 5C, 1-1/16" (27mm) bar capacity, utilizing a wide range of quickly interchangeable workholding devices such as collets, jaw chucks, step chucks, expanding arbors and much more. The 8,000-rpm spindle drive system features a 10-hp (7.5-kW) power rating with 35 ft-lb (47Nm) torque rating for optimum metal removal rates. The drive motor is fan-cooled and permanently sealed and lubricated for minimal maintenance.

16-Station Top Plate with Live Tooling-Standard
Bidirectional indexing of the VDI 25 turret top allows shortest path indexing for reduced non-cut time...non-lift turret indexing ensures contaminant-free operation. Since there are a large number of tool stations, easier processing of part families and fewer setups are realized. Fast setup times are possible by using quick-change VDI tool holders. Rigid tapping is standard.

Every station on the top plate can be equipped with a driven tool for cross- or end-milling/drilling operations in the toughest materials (only one station is actively driven at a time). Coolant is fed through turret ports, allowing tool holders to direct coolant to the cutting operation and enhance chip management. The turret pivot (safety shear) feature and the indexing drive motor torque limiter help prevent damage to the machine.

Sub Spindle-Standard
The sub spindle features a Fanuc 3-hp/2.2-kW drive system with speeds from 0 to 8,000 rpm-clockwise and counter-clockwise. Included is an air-actuated collet closer that utilizes S25-HS Dead-length® hardened & ground collets (emergency-style and special collets available for specialized workholding applications). Standard features include threading, rigid tapping, C-axis, one-degree spindle orient and part present detector.

Machine Parts Complete
To finish parts complete, the sub spindle features phase synchronization with the main spindle for on-the-fly part transfer. Besides complex arcs and angles (bar and slug capable), the standard 2-axis programmable sub spindle supports typical machining operations, such as facing, chamfering, grooving, threading, drilling, spot drilling, tapping and boring. Finished parts can be ejected into the machine's parts catcher following cut off operation. Z-axis travel is accomplished on linear guideways with an impressive traverse rate of 945ipm (24m/min).
