New HTD Tube Hone Goes Long, Scores Big in Material Removal
Latest addition to Sunnen's tube hone line has 16 m stroke length for extreme long-part applications including aircraft driveshafts and submarine periscopes, removes material at 2500 cm3/hr
Sunnen's new HTD tube hone goes to great lengths - and diameter - delivering a 16 m (52 ft) stroke, and handling parts up to 1000 mm (39 in) diameter. An electronically-controlled, 30-kW (40.23 hp) spindle motor powers stock removal of 2500 cm3/hr (150 in3/hr) for fast, accurate honing of helicopter driveshafts, marine driveshafts, submarine periscopes, downhole oil drilling components, cannon barrels, bi-metallic tubes and hydraulic cylinders. The machine is designed to correct bore geometry and size errors, as well as produce specific surface finishes and crosshatch angles to ensure correct sliding/sealing surfaces between mating parts.
The HTD, the longest, most powerful in the six-machine line of Sunnen tube hones, uses an operator-friendly Windows®-based controller for optimum control of bore geometry with functions for stroke position, motion, stone feed and cutting pressure. The HTD is particularly suited for controlling taper variation and drift in long bores, using Sunnen's double- and triple-banked tools, which have up to triple the abrasive length of ordinary tools. Available abrasives include aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, CBN and diamond honing stones
Six tube hone models from Sunnen - the HTA, HTB, HTH, HTC and the new HTD- handle everything from light-duty repair and resurfacing work to high-power, high material removal applications on long, large parts.
The HTA is an affordable, all-electric system for light-duty surfacing applications for flow meter tubes and hydraulic cylinder repair, providing stock removal in the range of 0.76 mm (0.030 in). The HTA is available in 2-meter (6.5 ft), or 4-meter (13.1 ft) stroke lengths; both configurations handle parts weighing up to 1815 kg (4000 lbs). The HTA is able to mount ANR275-type tooling, and is available for bore ID's of 63.5 to 533 mm (2.5 - 21 in) and maximum part OD of 610 mm (24.0 in).
The versatility of the model HTB makes it a good fit for job shops. It combines important capabilities, such as Short Stroke Cycle and Stroke Dwell for blind holes, with a built-in load meter to indicate high and low spots, allowing operators to adjust the stroke for optimum cycle time. Available in two-, four-, six- and eight-meter models, the HTB has a stroke range of 2000 mm to 8000 mm (78.74 - 314.96 in), handles part diameters up to 600 mm (23.6 in) and is ideal for sizing and finishing bores with ID's of 25 mm to 572 mm (1 - 22.5 in). The HTB's 3 kW (4 hp) spindle removes stock at a rate of 400 cm3 (25 in3) per hour.
The HTH series adds a ten-meter model to the sizes offered by the HTB series, and uses the same control and tool feed system. A 6 kW (8 hp) spindle removes 800 cm3 (49 in3) of material per hour. It has a maximum stroke length of up to 10 m (33 ft) and handles bore diameters from 25 to 1000 mm (1 - 39 in).
For hydraulic cylinders, gun barrels, precision tubing and other small-diameter, long-part applications, the CNC-controlled HTC tube hone provides bore finishing solutions for diameters from 4.1 mm (0.16 in) to 50 mm (2 in) and bore lengths up to 2760 mm (109 in). The HTC uses a variety of honing tools including MMT multi-stone mandrels, which provide superior speed and accuracy for decreased cycle times and lower cost per part.
All of the HT series machines are operated electromechanically, providing more precise control of the stroke, without the heat, noise and fluid leakage of hydraulic machines. Automation options for enhanced productivity include robotic integration for automated loading/unloading of parts.
