Truck Cab Manufacturer Safely and Efficiently Moves Aluminum Stringers Without Damage

The Creform A-frame style cart safely moves kitted, delicate aluminum parts from the company’s  warehouse area to the production floor

A manufacturer of commercial truck cabs had concerns about potential damage to aluminum stringers it needed to transport from its warehouse kitting operations to production lines.  The aluminum stringers are 2′ and 4´ slender products and susceptible to damage if not handled properly.  They were looking for carts that would allow them to easily load and unload the stringers then safely transport them through the plant. They turned to Creform Corporation, Greer, SC, to provide a solution.

In response, Creform custom designed an A-frame cart that met these requirements.  The cart is extremely stabile for transporting the stringers while its tilted shelves provide good visual inventory management and ease of parts loading and unloading.  After filling it with product in the warehouse it is moved directly to the production floor holding one shifts worth of inventory.

The cart is built using the Creform System of plastic coated steel 28mm and 42mm pipe, metal joints and accessories.  The main structure is built with 42mm pipe for overall cart strength while the 28mm pipe holds the shelves. The cart’s A-frame design tilts the half-inch HDPE shelves to help protect the inventory while making sure it stays securely in the storage bay.  It has three wide shelves for the 4' stringers and five narrow shelves for the 2' stringers.

The A-frame design adds stability to the cart since the weight is centered between the cart’s wheels.  As a safety feature, the open design helps associates see through the structure during transport from the warehouse location to the production area.

The overall dimensions of the cart are 57″ L x 63″ H x 59″W and it has a 500 lb capacity.  Since the cart is assembled using Creform metal joints it can easily be modified to handle other sized products should needs change.  It has four 5″ swivel (two locking) casters for easy rolling, positioning and securing.  Its modular design allows for adding accessories such as hitches for towing with either manned vehicles or Creform AGVs.

The Creform System is used to create an array of material handling and efficiency enhancing devices, including push, special purpose and trailer carts, flow racks, roller conveyors, workstations, and AGV/AGCs. The Creform System is a proven component in continuous improvement and Lean Manufacturing programs, and the company partners with customers in developing and implementing these programs.
