Triple Output Power Supply powers 2-5 in. TFT LCD panels.

Press Release Summary:

With input voltage range of 1.5-4.6 V, LTC3450 power converter is comprised of synchronous boost converter and 3 charge pumps in 3 x 3 x 0.75 mm QFN package. Synchronous rectification enables product to attain efficiencies above 90%, and controlled power-up sequence insures that AVDD output comes up first, followed by AGL and then AGH. In shutdown, all outputs are disconnected and actively discharged, eliminating chance of short-circuit faults.

Triple Output Power Supply for Small TFT-LCDs in a 3 x 3mm Package

MILPITAS, CA - April 2, 2004 - Linear Technology announces the LTC3450, a complete power converter solution for small (2" to 5") thin film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) panels. The LTC3450 operates from an input voltage range of 1.5V to 4.6V, enabling it to accommodate multicell alkaline/NiMH batteries as well as single cell Li-Ion. It generates all the required TFT-LCD voltages: 5.xV for AVDD; -5.x or -10.xV or -15.xV for VGL; and 10.xV or 15.xV for VGH. The LTC3450 can deliver up to 10mA for AVDD and 500uA for both VGL and VGH. The LTC3450 achieves efficiencies greater than 90% on an output since the primary boost converter uses a synchronous rectification topology. Quiescent current is only 75uA, providing maximum battery life, and its 3 x 3 x 0.75mm QFN package enable a tiny, low profile footprint.

The LTC3450 is comprised of a synchronous boost converter and three charge pumps. The synchronous boost converter enables the LTC3450 to operate at input voltages as low as 1.5V, allowing it to operate in dual cell alkaline applications and from 1.8V rails. Competing doubler charge pump solutions are limited to a minimum input voltage of 2.6V. Synchronous rectification also enables it to attain efficiencies above 90% compared to »65% for alternative charge pump solutions. Three integrated charge pumps provide the capability to double, triple and invert outputs for VGH and VGL biasing. A controlled power-up sequence insures that the AVDD output comes up first, followed by AGL, and then AGH. In shutdown, all outputs are disconnected and actively discharged, maximizing battery life and eliminating any chance of short-circuit faults.

The LTC3450 is available from stock in a 3mm x 3mm QFN package. Pricing starts at $2.50 each for 1,000-piece quantities
