Tellabs Launches the New Tellabs 6350 Transport Switch to Help Operators Optimize Network Efficiency and Rapidly Offer New Services

Next-Generation Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) Transport Switch Offers The Scalability and Density Operators Need to Build a Robust Metro Optical Network

NAPERVILLE, Ill., Feb. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Tellabs (Nasdaq: TLAB) introduced a new scalable, high-density transport switch that helps network operators build robust, flexible metro optical networks and quickly deliver new business services. The ultra-compact Tellabs 6350 transport switch enables operators to cost-effectively manage their backbone traffic in metro and regional networks. In addition, the Tellabs 6350 transport switch offers a "pay as your grow" model that enables service providers to increase network capacity and instantly provision new services -- when needed -- to lower initial capital investments.

"Tellabs introduces new products that help our customers grow their networks more easily and with minimal capital outlay," said Peter Viereck, vice president and general manager of Tellabs in Denmark. "Our new Tellabs 6350 transport switch meets our customers' increasing demand for switching of traffic and it complements our optical transport systems that are used to build cost-effective metro optical networks."

The Tellabs 6350 transport switch is a flexible and adaptive multi-service platform that delivers voice services from 2 Mbps and higher, leased line services and new value-added data services such as high speed Ethernet. With its high density and cost effectiveness, the 4/4/1 cross-connect can be deployed at the very edge of the network, optimizing network efficiency and minimizing operating costs from floor space to power consumption. One single rack of equipment can handle more than 1 million simultaneous phone calls and Internet sessions.

The Tellabs 6350 transport switch provides the ideal expansion route for customers of the Tellabs FOCUS(TM) SDH platform who require greater bandwidth and switching capacity. The Tellabs 6350 system can be used directly with Tellabs' dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) systems -- the Tellabs TITAN(R) 6100 and the Tellabs FOCUS 6200 optical transport systems - for capacity expansion through its colored interfaces, enabling flexible and cost-effective utilization of the existing fiber infrastructure.

Through a best-in-class network management system, which minimizes costly manual operations and network reconfigurations to help carriers reduce down-time, improve customer satisfaction and save staff time, the Tellabs 6350 transport switch seamlessly integrates with other Tellabs transport switching and optical networking systems.

The Tellabs 6350 transport switch is fully manageable by the Tellabs FOCUS NM2100, a carrier-class optical and SDH management system that offers graphical network configuration, fault management and automated or semi-automated path set-up. The Tellabs FOCUS NM2100 enables open interfaces (Q3) both upward and downward for easy integration with other management systems, and it also manages all other Tellabs FOCUS SDH systems as well as Tellabs' DWDM systems.
