Transducer Technology Used On Space Shuttle Provides Down-To-Earth, Accurate Position Feedback For Industrial Components

Compact external-mount transducer family from Transducers Direct provides high-precision positioning - linearity of 0.5% and repeatability of 0.0001 in. - without an astronomical price

February 2002 - The new family of compact external-mount transducers from Transducers Direct taps advanced positioning technology developed for military and aerospace applications - including the space shuttle - to provide accurate component
positioning on industrial machinery and lab equipment. The easy-install transducers, with low-profile housing, offer positioning linearity to 0.5% and repeatability of 0.0001 in., without a sky-high price tag or bulky form factor.

The external-mount transducers are designed for travels of 0.5 in. to 78 in. Direct replacements for lower-grade transducers, they provide repeatable positioning for injection molding machines, robots, assembly equipment, die casting machines and
printing machinery, as well as hydraulic/pneumatic cylinders. The transducers are ruggedly built to survive sensor-unfriendly shop floor environments, turning a deaf ear to electrical noise and magnetic interference, and featuring models sealed to IP66
and 50-G shock resistance. The transducers have a wide operating temperature range of -55 to 105°C and specification of MIL-R-39023 Grade C 0.1% output smoothness.

Engineered to last over 10-million full-travel cycles or 200-million dither cycles, each transducer features a precious metal wiper with precision-machined attack angle to accurately match rod profile, minimizing wear and frictional heat build-up on high-cycle-rate applications. A smooth conductive film sprayed onto the transducer's rod provides exceptionally low contact resistance for maximum life.

The transducers are powered by 10VDC and have conventional 5-pin metal connector allowing quick installation. An optional programmable setpoint controller offers homing capability and standard 4-20mA, 0-5VDC and 0-l0VDC outputs for PLCs.

Available digital displays complement the transducers and provide an economical alternative to PLCs or dedicated controllers for applications needing only a simple position display interface. Displays are available in standard readout-only versions and tri-color bar graph versions with four programmable setpoints. Optional scaleable analog output with 16-bit resolution allows communication between other processes and controls.

Transducers Direct tests every external-mount transducer prior to shipment and builds to stock for immediate delivery. The transducers are available for simple, secure online purchase at www.transducersdirect.com, with list prices starting at $137. A variety of custom housing configurations are available.
