Micrel Launches New On-the-Go USB Transceiver for Wireless Devices

MIC2555 IC Enables Direct Communication Between USB-Enabled Appliances Without the Use of a PC

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 31 -- Micrel Inc., (NASDAQ:MCRL), an industry leader in Power, Connect and Protect IC solutions, today launched the MIC2555, a USB On-The-Go (OTG) transceiver chip that enables point-to-point communications, without the use of a PC, between USB devices such as cell phones, digital cameras, printers and PDAs. The chip performs as a PHY for USB OTG serial interfaces and is compatible with a wide variety of stand-alone microprocessors, ASICs and COT designs, OTG IP cores and application-specific standard products. The MIC2555 is currently sampling with volume quantities available in Q2. Pricing starts at $1.42 in 10K quantity.

"The MIC2555 enables designers to completely bypass the use of a PC when generating communications between USB devices," said Thruston Awalt, product marketing manager, Micrel. "The chip addresses the ever expanding market of USB enabled tools, appliances and devices, enabling the latest consumer products to talk to each other and exchange information."

The chip is fully compliant with USB 2.0 and USB-OTG supplement 1.0a specifications. It also supports mini-USB car kit interface and UART communication. The IC is offered in a small 4mm x 4mm MLF(TM) packaging, thereby saving valuable board space. Featuring low power, the chip also offers +/- 15k ESD protection, eliminating the need for additional protection devices.

"Micrel continues to aggressively address the latest trends in consumer devices," noted Bob Whelton, executive vice president operations, Micrel. "One of the hottest new trends involves the linking of various devices to one another to share such diverse information such as call lists, images and photos. The MIC2555 enables streamlined communications between a myriad of devices including mobile phones, PDAs, digital cameras, camcorders, data cradles, CD and MPW3 players and printers."
