Traffic Manager Chip from Teradiant Named 'Best Coprocessor' at NPC West

Available today, innovative chip combines traffic management
and switching at 10Gbps, 20Gbps and 40Gbps

San Jose, CA - October 27, 2003 - TeraPacket,(TM) a high-performance chip developed by Teradiant for managing traffic on enterprise, metro and core networks, has been named "Best Coprocessor" at NPC West 2003, the leading conference and exhibition focusing on network processors and related products. A panel of industry analysts cited the TeraPacket TN9450 for its technology, innovation, and industry impact. The coprocessor award competition draws entrants from leading vendors of content-addressable memories (CAMs), security chips, traffic managers, switch fabrics, and classification chips.

TeraPacket is the first chip to combine traffic management and switching at 40Gbps, making possible a new density in switches and routers. For example, a single-card system that uses the TeraPacket TN9450 both to manage multi-channel traffic and provide switching eliminates the need for separate switch-fabric chips. Requiring fewer components, the resulting system requires less board space, consumes less power, and reduces development costs.

"The TN9450 stood out from the other coprocessors at the show due to its industry-leading performance and innovative technology," said Linley Gwennap, principal analyst for The Linley Group and conference director for NPC West. "The fact that it can be used either as a 40Gbps traffic manager or as a complete 40Gbps switch adds to the potential industry impact of Teradiant's product."

The TN9450 works in conjunction with network processors or packet-forwarding ASICs to provide a highly integrated, next-generation solution for a range of networking applications. These include "pizza box" systems, service cards, and fabric-based chassis systems used in network-edge and aggregation applications. Working at wire speed, the device provides queuing, scheduling and QoS management at an aggregate duplex speed of 40Gbps and supports 256 ports or channels.

Incorporating industry-standard interfaces, TeraPacket can be deployed rapidly in systems with other industry-standard components. At NPC West, for example, Teradiant demonstrated interoperability of the TN9450 with the Xelerated X10q network processor. Teradiant also demonstrated interoperability of its TeraPacket TN8450 traffic manager with the TeraChip(TM) switch fabric and the AMCC Packet Routing Switch Fabric.(TM)

"Partnering with leading NPU and switch fabric firms demonstrates Teradiant's dedication to providing system designers with best-of-breed platforms for building high-ROI systems for a breadth of applications," said Satchit Jain, CEO of Teradiant.

The TN9450 is part of a family of high-performance traffic manager chips. The TN8450 is a full-featured 20Gbps traffic manager targeted at chassis-based applications using switch fabrics. Both chips are also available in lower-bandwidth versions, enabling system designers to meet existing bandwidth demand and to scale their applications as requirements change.

About NPC West
The Network Processors Conference is the only conference totally dedicated to network processors and supporting chips. The program includes presentations, tutorials and panels of interest to those involved with making, using, supporting and marketing network processors. The exhibition highlights the latest network processor-related products and technology, including traffic managers, switch fabrics and security processors. The Network Processors Conference 2003 West attracted chipmakers, computer and communications equipment manufacturers, board and design suppliers, VARs, OEMs, integrators, system analysts, testing laboratories, consultants, marketers and providers of hardware and software support and tools for network processors.
