Original Press Release:

New Multi-Axis Force And Torque Sensor System Communicates Directly With Desktop And Laptop Computers

The new DAQ F/T (Force/Torque), a six-axis Force/Torque transducer system designed for integration with PCs and laptop computers, is now available from ATI Industrial Automation, Apex, N.C. The DAQ F/T consists of a transducer, interface board, power supply, data acquisition device and software tools. A proprietary interface board on or near the transducer produces a seven-channel signal that can be read by most analog input data acquisition cards. These signals are converted to force and torque output by software running on the PC.

F/T sensors are critical components of robotic applications in electrical and mechanical assembly, product testing, material handling, and many other applications. An F/T sensor system helps robots and automated machines verify part insertion, use as a feedback system, apply constant force during buffing, polishing and deburring operations, collect force information for lot testing and statistical process control (SPC), etc.

DAQ F/T Details

The DAQ F/T System interfaces with most analog input data acquisition cards with at least seven available channels. ATI currently offers PCI, cPCI, PCMCIA, ISA, VME and USB data acquisition systems with a variety of resolutions and sampling rates. The system's interface board provides low-noise amplified strain signals, so sampling rate is limited only by the speed of the data acquisition device. The system also features an integrated power supply and high overload protection.

A Windows application is included, featuring a real-time display of forces and torques, full configuration options, and basic data logging capabilities. ATI Industrial Automation can provide a compatible National Instruments data acquisition device that is required to run this application.

The F/T system also integrates seamlessly into your own applications. The bundled software includes a reusable, hardware-independent Windows ActiveX component that configures the transducer system and converts raw voltages into forces and torques. For non-Windows target platforms, a C library is included to perform the necessary F/T conversion.
